Vitamin Shoppe is currently facing a class action lawsuit alleging that the supplement maker is making misleading claims about the effectiveness of its glutamine products.
The Vitamin Shoppe BodyTech class action lawsuit, which was first filed in December 2018, alleges Vitamin Shoppe ignored scientific data regarding L-glutamine benefits.
According to the L-glutamine class action lawsuit, Vitamin Shoppe advertised its glutamine products as being “anti-catabolic,” and providing L-glutamine benefits such as “Muscle Growth,” “Muscle Endurance,” and “Muscle Recovery.”
However, the plaintiffs claim that Vitamin Shoppe glutamine supplements “do absolutely nothing for the recovery from exercise, recovery of muscle tissue or ability to decrease muscle wasting.”
They allege that Vitamin Shoppe intended for consumers to interpret the labels on its glutamine products as providing health benefits for immune support and muscle recovery even though the company knew that they provided no such L-glutamine benefits.
The Vitamin Shoppe glutamine class action lawsuit points to several studies that found that L-glutamine supplementation did not have a significant effect on muscle performance, muscle protein degradation or body composition in healthy adults, and did not enhance weightlifting performance.
Vitamin Shoppe was unjustly enriched because it misrepresented the nature and quality of its BodyTech glutamine supplements, the plaintiffs allege. They are seeking economic and compensatory damages on behalf of the proposed Class.
Consumers who purchased Vitamin Shoppe BodyTech glutamine supplements in the United States may qualify to file a glutamine class action lawsuit and seek compensation for Vitamin Shoppe’s alleged misrepresentations about L glutamine benefits.
In February 2021, the plaintiffs filed a motion asking a judge to certify a Class of consumers who purchased Vitamin Shoppe BodyTech Creatine & Glutamine with Beta-Alanine in the state of Massachusetts, and a Class of consumers who purchased Vitamin Shoppe BodyTech Glutamine and BodyTech BCAA & Glutamine in Illinois since March 21, 2011.
What Is Glutamine?
L-glutamine is an amino acid that is found naturally in the body. It is produced in the muscles and distributed through the bloodstream to the organs. Glutamine is necessary to make other chemicals the body needs, such as nitrogen and glucose.
Glutamine is available over the counter or as a prescription supplement. Glutamine powder may be sold commercially in packets or in capsule form.
There are several medical uses for glutamine, according to WebMD. It may be taken orally for sickle cell disease and to help patients recover from surgery, bone marrow transplants, HIV/AIDS complications, chemotherapy, radiation, and injuries and burns. It may also be given to patients intravenously to improve their recovery after surgery.
WebMD notes that glutamine supplements do not seem to improve athletic performance.
