A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the “Who’s Eligible” section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engine’s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires — all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.

To be eligible for certain types of compensation — such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses — under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

How come the Elantra 2017 was it in on this lawsuit because my engine blew in it too had a $118,000 mi and I if I want to know that I would never have bought it I paid over 9 grand for it so I need help to figure out what to do next

  2. Troy Emanuel says:

I v got a handai Elantra it’s had two blown motors the first one had a rod cap come off and put the rod through the side of the motor the second one was knocking and went to start it and it burned up the starter and now thay won’t all most $5000 to fix it but first thay won’t $1500 just for a negative battery cable and a starter. I can’t afford this kind of repar

  3. Maura Mallory says:

I have a 2016 Kia Sorento, while driving on a busy road my car stop and I coasted to center lane. My mechanic told me to tow car to Kia, they had seen this before and Kia should fix it. Kia looked said the bearings failed and my engine had seized. Report to Kia was made and repair was denied, because an up grade that is not out in any public forum was not done and per the lawsuit it was my responsibility to have found out about it by checking the Kia website, going to Kia for maintenance or to have recalls done. So I my understanding on this is recalls are voluntary, and I am not required to go to Kia for maintenance, and I had no reason to even think I had a dangerous issue with my car. Kia is blaming me, and they have not returned my calls, request to talk to supervisor and that because of the settlement puts all the responsibilities on the owner with owners having no way to know without coming to them, and leaving drivers in danger because the sensor up grade is not a safety issue to them. My mechanic said when i asked about the bearings they should not wear out, and my car has less then 80,000 miles on it.

  4. Shelly Blagg says:

I have a 2016 Hyundai Tucson. About 2 years ago I paid 10,000 to have a used engine with 70,000 miles put in my car. 2 years later, 152,000 miles my car broke down. I paid 1,500 in repairs and it still won’t run. They said I need to put in a new engine. I was denied a good faith engine bc I had a used engine put in 2 years ago. Not sure why I wouldn’t qualify as the used engine I purchased is obviously faulty. Dealership is of no help

  5. Fern Frank says:

I have a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate with a little over 125k miles. Had an extended warranty up to 120K and all work on vehicle has been done by Hyundai. Driving down to NJ and the car started a banging noise, no indicator lights showing a problem but the car died. Was towed to dealer and they state engine has seized!. Oil change done two days prior. Now I am stuck in NJ and have to rent a car to get home.

  6. Dennis Beach says:

Hyundai owns about 35% of Kia. Hyundai is a VERY LARGE company, and Kia could not afford to buy them. Hyundai sells more cars worldwide than Stellantis(Chrysler). Just outside of Seoul, SK, Hyundai has one of the largest automotive manufacturing “cities” in the world. Just about every part is made there for their lineup of cars. Hyundai has numerous plants in the southeast US, which manufactures a number of models sold here. And lets not forget Genesis, their luxury division, which has a lineup of fine cars. All of the drivetrains for Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia are made by Hyundai. And now they make EV’s, which I’m not sure we are all ready for. This country does not have the electrical infrastructure to handle EV’s at this time.

  7. Betty Phillips says:

I had a Hyundai, and I have a Kia Soul and a Tucson. I would like if someone to contact me in reference to the Law Suit

  8. Sabrina Pacetti says:

I have 2018 Hyundai sante fe sport.117.000 miles with engine problems.was smoking and burning oil.took to garage 3 times. Now want me to pay almost 6.000 dollars for a used engine. The valves were burnt or broke.I kept the oil changed in it.the second time I took it to the garage and paid almost 400 dollars for spark plugs and oil change and they said it was fixed.2 days later I had to take it back.It was shaking and missing so bad that I couldn’t drive it.parked a long interstate and had it towed there.i have payed about 400 dollars in towing.my car is at the dealership still.been there for 13 weeks.i can’t afford to have it fixed so I am going to have to have it repoed.i has the extended warranty which was good for 120.000 miles.but according to them it didn’t cover the problem.

  9. Elaine Najarro says:

I have 2018 Hyundai Elantra. It was leaking and burning oil and would stall and completely turn off evertime I press on brakes. My repair expenses included changing hoses, thermostat and engine gasket.

  10. Rose M Parks says:

Please add me I had a Kia Soul engine and catalytic converter both went out together so I had car loaner to come get it.
