Sunday Service Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Kanye West is in settlement talks with plaintiffs who worked at his first Sunday Service in November 2019.
  • Why: Plaintiffs allege West miscategorized the workers and failed to give them adequate breaks, pay, or acceptable working conditions.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California Superior Court.

Kanye West is currently in settlement talks after two class action lawsuits alleged he violated labor laws by failing to properly compensate hundreds of workers at his first ever Sunday Service event in November 2019.

While one of the Kanye West Sunday Service class action lawsuits was dismissed, the other, led by plaintiff Michael Pearson, claims he is representing hundreds of Class Members who were not given adequate breaks or pay and were otherwise mistreated by the rapper/fashion designer.

Kanye West Sunday Service Workers Claim Missed Breaks, Lack of Pay

Kanye West Sunday Service workers allegedly had to either stand or sit on the ground due all day to an absence of chairs. In addition, workers were left stranded when a promised shuttle back to their cars failed to show up, according to the class action lawsuit.

Pearson also claimed that he was paid a flat rate regardless of the number of hours he worked in a day — an alleged violation of wage and hour laws.

West’s legal representation asked back in June for the case to be removed to a federal court, since the amount in controversy would allegedly exceed $5 million, according to The Irish Sun

That same month both parties filed a joint stipulation to temporarily stay the action in light of ongoing mediation. Documents show a private mediation is set for April 22, 2022.

“The Parties agree that the interests of judicial economy and the interests of preserving judicial and party resources favor a continued stay of the action, including discovery, until 45 days after mediation completion,” states the joint filing.

This isn’t the first class action lawsuit lodged against a member of the West family by workers who say they were not treated fairly. Kim Kardashian West – who filed for divorce from the Donda rapper back on Feb. 19 – had a class action lawsuit lodged against her in May that alleged she committed multiple California wage and hour violations against her former gardening and maintenance crew workers.
