More than 4 million removable foam facial interfaces for Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality Headsets have been recalled by Facebook Reality Labs after thousands of consumers reported developing rashes, swelling, burning, itching, hives, and bumps from the accessories — some of which required medical attention.

The recall notice, issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), warns consumers to stop using the Oculus Quest 2 accessories if they experience any skin irritation. All consumers, says the agency, should contact Facebook for a free silicone cover for the virtual reality headset.

“The firm has received approximately 5,716 reports of incidents of skin irritation and approximately 45 reports of consumers that required medical attention,” says the agency’s notice.

The recalled Oculus Quest 2 headset has a black foam interface that comes into contact with the user’s face. The recalled accessories can be identified by serial numbers that start with “1WMHH” and end with a number below “1264.” A complete list of recalled headsets is available on the CPSC recall notice.

Oculus Quest 2 headsets and accessories were sold in the United States and Canada at BestBuy, GameStop, Target, Walmart, and other retailers, and online at Oculus.com, Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, Gamestop.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com between October 2020 and July 2021. The foam interface was included in headsets that retailed for between $300 and $400, as well as in packs or individually for between $20 and $40.

Facebook Reality Labs issued a statement in response to the recall of the Oculus Quest 2 accessory.

“We took the skin irritation reports very seriously as soon as we learned about them and, beginning in December, we promptly conducted a thorough investigation including receiving advice from leading dermatologists and toxicologists,” states the response.

“These experts have advised that skin irritation can occur in some segments of the population from many household items—even things like tomatoes or shampoo—and that the rates we’ve seen are in line with expectations,” continues the statement which asserts that Facebook tested the foam interface in the Oculus Quest 2 accessories and found “no unexpected nor hazardous contaminants.”

Facebook says that it has temporarily suspended sales of Quest 2 across the globe to incorporate the silicone cover into all models.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other recalls in the interest of consumer safety.

I have an extensive face rash from the quest 2 around my eyes and nose. I only learned today after a week of wondering what it was from, that it is a common issue from the quest 2 foam. I never heard anything from Meta about it or the possible risks. I spoke with Meta and they simply deferred me to an email back from their team in 24 to 48 hours. Not even a call back, or any information was given such as what type of rash it is, what the material was, what resources are recommended… It’s been a few weeks now since I’ve used the quest and the rash is getting worse where now I’m seeking medical services. It appears to be fairly common, in fact, wide spread. Why didn’t anyone get notices? Are there long term side effects? Why doesn’t meta have anything posted about this? Obviously I’ll never use the quest again and what about the ones I’ve purchased for my kids? What about medical costs, and any long term treatments for scaring?

Meta will not respond to emails. Chats. They have requested information in several questions. They do not respond to their emails and then they lie that they already sent one! And disconnect chat!

Add another one to the list. Used my quest for a couple hours and when I took it off my face where the foam sat was rather red then over the next couple days it’s progressed into a scaly rash. One google search shoes this issue is a lot more serious than meta leads it on to be and is not inline with normal household products.
