GNC sells Grenade — Thermo Detonator (GTD) supplementA GNC customer says the company sells a dietary supplement called Grenade that contains amphetamines, and almost killed him because of its health effects.

Plaintiff Jay Rossi claims he purchased a Grenade supplement marketed and sold by General Nutrition Corporation, known as GNC.

Rossi says Grenade contains amphetamines, and caused him such an adverse reaction that it almost killed him.

The GNC class action alleges that Rossi did not know that the product contained amphetamines and would not have purchased it had he known.

Rossi states that General Nutrition Corporation is the world’s largest dietary supplement retailer, and “advertises, markets, sells, and distributes dietary supplements manufactured by third-parties.”

He says that one of these supplements is the Grenade — Thermo Detonator (GTD) supplement, made by Grenade USA LLC.

Rossi aims to hold GNC and the makers of Grenade liable for his injuries and liable for the injuries of customers similarly affected by the product.

The GTD amphetamine class action lawsuit states that Rossi purchased a bottle of the GTD supplement at a GNC store in Illinois.

Allegedly, when Rossi attempted to use the product normally, it “almost killed him” because the contents were laced with “amphetamines or an amphetamine type substance.”

The GNC class action states that the plaintiff did not know that Grenade contained amphetamines, and had he known that, he would not have purchased the product.

Rossi claims that he was hospitalized in a Chicago hospital for five days because of his reaction to the amphetamines. He says that he stopped breathing and hallucinated after ingesting the product.

According to the GNC Grenade class action lawsuit, Rossi had a drug test which showed that he had ingested amphetamines though he had not knowingly done so.

Allegedly, the product contains dangerous levels of Yohimbe Bark Extract, Bitter Orange Extract, Synephrine and/or Octopamine.

The GNC Grenade adverse reactions class action lawsuit says that after Rossi recovered from his “near death experience” caused by the supplement, he returned to the GNC store and spoke to an employee about his experience.

Rossi allegedly asked to speak to the manager, and was told that the manager was out. However, after hearing Rossi’s story, the GNC employee reportedly called the manager and used the code AER to describe the situation, which stands for “Adverse Event Return.”

The employee took note of Rossi’s name and phone number, and called a corporate office. Rossi was then told that everyone had left the corporate office, but the employee assured him that “someone will call you from corporate,” and that Rossi should “let them know everything.”

The GNC supplement class action claims that Rossi worried that other people would suffer a similar near death experience to his, so he left the bottle of Grenade supplement at the store “with the hope that the employee would preserve the sample for future testing.”

Rossi says he has never received a call from GNC.

Allegedly, the company knew or should have known that these experiences were possible, because other customers reported similar case.

Rossi claims that despite this knowledge, the company did not attempt to remedy Rossi’s injuries or prevent future events like the one he experience.

To support his claims that others have had a similar experience, Rossi noted that another customer described similar dangerous reactions on GNC’s website, and noted that a GNC employee responded, apologizing for the customer’s experience.

Rossi is represented by James C. Vlahakis of the Sulaiman Law Group LTD.

The GNC Grenade Supplement Amphetamine Reaction Class Action Lawsuit is Jay Rossi v. General Nutrition Corporation, et al., Case No. 1:19-cv-01417, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division.
