Paramount subscription class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiffs Trevor Adkins and Michael Shuler filed a class action lawsuit against Paramount Global.
  • Why: Paramount allegedly fails to honor subscription cancellations for its Paramount+ streaming service and continues to charge for automatic renewals even after members cancel their subscriptions.
  • Where: The Paramount class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

Paramount Global unlawfully continues to charge consumers in an automatic renewal, even after they cancel their monthly subscriptions, according to a class action lawsuit filed Dec. 4 in New York federal court.

Plaintiffs Trevor Adkins and Michael Shuler say they subscribed to 30-day free trials of the Paramount+ streaming service and cancelled the Paramount subscription before the end of the free trial period.

However, Paramount allegedly charged each plaintiff a monthly fee on their credit cards after the 30-day trial period expired even though they canceled their subscriptions.

Paramount class action alleges company knows its cancellation scheme dupes customers

When they signed up for the free trial Paramount subscription, Adkins and Shuler had to provide their credit card information. The terms of the free trial stated that their subscription would automatically renew unless canceled, and that subscribers who cancel the Paramount subscription before the free trial period expires would not be charged, according to the Paramount class action lawsuit.

However, the plaintiffs say they were charged for Paramount automatic renewal after they canceled their subscriptions, and that their experience is not unique.

“Paramount is well aware that its membership cancellation scheme deceives consumers,” the class action lawsuit says. The plaintiffs claim “hundreds” of Paramount subscribers have complained of the company’s failure to honor their cancellations.

They point to consumer complaints on the Better Business Bureau’s website from subscribers who claim they were charged immediately after subscribing for a free trial or who were subject to Paramount automatic renewal even after they canceled their subscriptions.

Adkins and Shuler filed the Paramount class action lawsuit on behalf of themselves and a proposed class of U.S. consumers who cancelled their paid Paramount+ subscription but were subsequently charged by Paramount.

The class action asserts claims for violation of the federal Electronic Funds Transfer Act, unjust enrichment and conversion, as well as violations of New York, Michigan and Kentucky consumer protection laws.

Earlier this year, Paramount agreed to pay more than $120 million to settle claims by shareholders that the 2019 Viacom-CBS merger was unfair.

They got me too. A billion dollar company not issuing a refund when it’s at fault is absurd. It’s like a scam some broke bum on the street would run. They only got me for 2 months but I know without a shadow of a doubt that I cancelled it. I even put a reminder on my phones calendar.

  2. Joe Lolley says:

I tried to cancel Paramount+… it just will never work. It does not allow me to watch its streaming programming. It always states “optimizing video”, buffers, and quits. I try to cancel the service and get a refund due to Paramount+ not providing the service that I am paying for, but they do not allow me to cancel and refuse to refund, even though they can/will not fix their issue to allow viewing of the service that I pay for.

  3. Tammy G Collard says:

Well add my name to the list. Paramount just got me for another years cost on my subscription even AFTER I called plus went on line to cancel my subscription a month prior to the renewal. When I called they said would be happy to cancel, but due to billing I would not be able to get a refund. If you take my money, you have a way to put it back! PERIOD!!. This is total BS. I’m so freaking mad I can’t see straight. And don’t you bother calling, you just get customer support from people who barely speak English.

  4. Brittiny Lee says:

I have been charged one to many times with Paramount+. I have canceled my subscription, then I renewed it a few months later. Well I just paid my subscription again not even 2 weeks ago, then last night I click on the icon and bam it says please renew your subscription again!! Now this has been going on for a few months now. Why am I being charged 2-3 times a month!! It’s ridiculous. So yes add me as well!

  5. Tiffany Parrish says:

Paramount tried to charge every card that ever existed (a total of 3) every single month for a year after my annual subscription ran out, I deleted the card once every 3 months, and after 9 months never put another card number on file but the same 3 cards were debited every month.

  6. Susan says:

They charged me this over 4 months

  7. Barbara says:

I had cancelled my subscription, and found out that it hadn’t been.

  8. Alexandra K Peirce says:

They charged me this month!!! And they aren’t doing anything about anything!

  9. Monica Estrada says:

Yes I agree 100% with plaintiffs I was a target as well I did all the appropriate steps that they mentioned they followed as well and same story . After doing so they continued to charge me for months I never even realized until almost a year later because I didn’t even expect that it would be coming from a big company or large network I was looking in all the wrong places till I finally narrowed it down to only a few then it was a hassle to get a hold of someone to make them aware and in the end result they cancelled it but I was never refunded all the months they charged my account just the present month in question and nothing more……. They know people don’t have the time or patience to go after them so they scam customers and get away with way more money than most customers agree to.. I ts unfair and just plain Wrong!

Got me for $150.00 then reduced it to something like $70 or $80 gave me credit refund
