Several plaintiffs in lawsuits regarding the weedkiller Roundup’s alleged link to cancer have petitioned their judge to expedite their cases, due to the serious and often life-threatening nature of the disease.
Roundup Trial Plaintiffs Petition Judge for Speedy Trials
An 87 year old woman and the parents of a 13 year old child both petitioned California judge Winifred Smith on Sept. 12, 2019, requesting that their separate trials be moved up. The plaintiffs in both cases claim that Monsanto’s popular weedkiller Roundup caused them to develop cancer.
Elderly plaintiff Treesa C. and the parents of minor plaintiff G.B. both requested a speedy trial under a California state statute that allows minors, plaintiffs over the age of 70, and people with severe health conditions to cut the line of other pending cases and receive an earlier trial.
Treesa claims to have undergone four rounds of cancer treatment, including radiation, as well as suffering a recent stroke in addition to other health conditions. G.B. is a minor who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Her parents are also listed as plaintiffs and are seeking to have her Roundup trial moved to January 15.
G.B. is not the only minor to have filed a lawsuit against Bayer and Monsanto regarding Roundup. According to U.S. Right to Know, at least one other child, a 12 year old boy from California, has also filed a lawsuit claiming that exposure to Roundup resulted in a cancer diagnosis.
Background on Roundup and Glyphosate
The main ingredient in Monsanto and Bayer’s Roundup weedkiller is glyphosate, an herbicide that kills broadleaf plants and grasses. Roundup has been on the market since 1974 and has been used by countless gardeners, landscapers, and home owners.
In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer officially classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans. Additionally, studies and research have shown that exposure to Roundup and glyphosate may increase the risk of developing certain cancers by at least 40 percent.
Despite this research, Monsanto and Bayer claim that the chemical in Roundup is safe and not carcinogenic. At the same time, at least 18,000 plaintiffs claim that the herbicide caused them to develop cancer and other serious health side effects.
Roundup Cancer Lawsuits and Settlements
More than 13,400 cases have so far been filed against Bayer and Monsanto regarding Roundup’s alleged link to cancer. Previous Roundup lawsuits have resulted in multi-million dollar settlements and payouts. Many of the Roundup trial plaintiffs are elderly, as the effects of Roundup-related cancer may not be discovered until years or even decades following exposure to the product.
Victims who have developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to exposure to Roundup and glyphosate may be eligible to hire an attorney and file a class action lawsuit against Bayer and Monsanto. Victims may be able to collect compensation and financial damages through a Roundup trial.
Tressa and G.B.’s Roundup Cancer Lawsuits are Case Nos: JCCP004953 and HG19026873 in the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Alameda.
