Several popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced recalls last week for products that may pose injury to consumers. Here are Top Class Actions’ top recalls for the week of Sept. 11.

TOMY initiates high chair recall due to fall hazard

TOMY initiated a recall of approximately 83,000 Boon and Boon Flair high chairs due to a safety concern involving a loose bolt that can potentially lead to a fall hazard. The recall extends to 2,850 high chairs distributed in Canada.

The recall encompasses various models, including the Flair Elite high chair Model B751, as well as Flair high chair models B701-B709, B716-B718, B731, B10147, B11068-B11069 and B11401. To identify the affected high chairs, consumers should look for the model number and manufacturing date code, both of which are printed on a label located underneath the chair’s base.

TOMY reported 34 incidents related to high chair malfunctions, comprising 24 falls and 11 injuries, which include bruises and scratches. To address this safety concern, TOMY advises consumers to immediately discontinue the use of the recalled high chairs and get in touch with them to obtain a free repair kit. This kit includes a set of bolts, split washers and flat washers designed to rectify the issue.

Emporia smart plugs recalled due to shock risks

Emporia Smart Plugs issued a recall for 80,000 of its North American smart plug products due to concerns regarding inadequate grounding, potentially exposing users to electrical shock risks. These smart plugs are designed to enable consumers to monitor energy consumption and remotely control household appliances via an app.

The recall specifically targets Emporia’s 120V North American smart plugs, which measure approximately 3.5 inches in width, 1.5 inches in height and 1 inch in depth. There have been no reported injuries associated with this recall. However, Emporia received reports of two instances where the smart plugs failed to achieve proper grounding and did not function as intended.

In light of this safety concern, consumers should discontinue using the smart plugs immediately. Emporia will remotely disable these devices if they are connected to the internet, and consumers should safely discard the plugs.

For smart plugs that cannot be connected to the internet, Emporia offers a free return shipping service. Affected customers should contact Emporia for either a full refund or a free replacement. They can also contact Emporia at (844) 367-6742 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Bombardier Recreational Products, Polaris issue recall for snowmobiles

Polaris issued a recall involving about 15,900 of its model year 2022-2023 Matryx Pro RMK and Matryx RMK Khaos snowmobiles due to potential safety concerns related to their handlebar hooks.

There have been four reported incidents of puncture wounds related to the handlebar hooks on the recalled snowmobiles. Consumers in possession of these recalled Polaris snowmobiles should stop using them immediately and to reach out to the company or an authorized dealer to arrange for a free repair.

In a separate recall, Bombardier recalled about 4,070 of its Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles due to concerns regarding the main injector fuel return hose. The hose can potentially leak, presenting a significant fire hazard that may result in property damage, injuries or even fatalities. Bombardier reports six instances of snowmobile fuel leaks, none of which resulted in injuries.

Pirelli recalls bicycle tires due to deflation, fall risk

Tire manufacturer Pirelli issued a recall for approximately 14,500 of its Pirelli P ZERO Race TLR Bicycle Tires, citing concerns they may experience rapid deflation, thereby posing a potential fall hazard to riders.

The recall, which the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published Sept. 7, also encompasses an additional 550 bicycle tires sold in Canada. The CPSC identified that the tire beads on the affected Pirelli bicycle tires can dislodge from the rim, leading to a sudden loss of air pressure that could result in a loss of bike control.

Pirelli reported one instance of rapid air loss associated with this recall, leading to a minor injury. Owners of the recalled Pirelli bicycle tires are strongly urged to cease using them immediately and should contact the company directly for a complimentary replacement product or full refund.

Novartis issues recall for Sandimmune oral solution due to crystal formation

Novartis initiated a voluntary recall for a specific lot of its 50-milliliter bottles of Sandimmune due to crystal formation inside these bottles, which has the potential to result in dosing inaccuracies.

The recall specifies that the crystallization may lead to uneven distribution of cyclosporine within the medication, subsequently causing either overdose or underdose scenarios. Such variations could undermine the drug’s efficacy, particularly in its role as a prophylactic agent for organ rejection in kidney, liver and heart allogeneic transplant cases. Prolonged exposure to overdose levels of cyclosporine could lead to cyclosporine toxicity over time, compounding the health risks associated with this recall.

The affected recall lot is FX001691, with an expiration date of Dec. 2025. Novartis has not received any reports of illnesses linked to this recall.
