skylight digital photo frame with power adapterSkylight recent recalled power adapters sold with their digital frames due to concerns that these adapters can pose an electrical shock risk.

On Nov. 7, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Skylight would be recalling the power adapter sold with their digital frames. According to the regulator, these power adapters can break and pose an electrical shock hazard.

Skylight digital frames were reportedly developed by a team of students from Harvard Business School. The students say that they were united by a common coal to share photos with their loved ones while living far away. Their solution was a digital frame that would display photos in homes in a beautiful way to help family members feel closer together despite the geographical distance between them. Following a successful Kickstarter which raised $55,000, the Skylight brand came to life.

Unfortunately, the adapters sold with Skylight digital frames are reportedly defective. According to the CPSC, the power adapter casing can break when it is plugged into an electrical outlet. As a result, the metal prongs of the adapter are allegedly exposed – posing an electrical shock hazard.

Skylight has reportedly received eight reports of the recalled adaptors breaking and exposing the metal prongs. This includes the report of one consumer who was shocked by the broken product.

Electrical shock can happen on a small or large scale. While electrical shock from a lightning or power lines would be severe and likely deadly, electric shock from an outlet or appliance would likely be more mild. However, even with less serious instances of electrical shock, consumers may be left with burns, pain, and other complications. Electrical shock from household items can also be a risk for children if they chew on an electrical cord or put their mouth on an outlet.

In order to reduce the risk of consumer injury, Skylight voluntarily recalled its adapters.

The recall reportedly affects around 65,000 Series I power adapters for Skylight digital photo frames. An additional 159 of these units were reportedly sold in Canada.

If consumers are looking to identify the affected adapters, they can reportedly look for UPC code 679113611535 on the digital photo frame packaging. Only the Series 1 adapters are included in the recall. These adapters are black and have a circular indentation on the side.

Consumers may have purchased Skylight digital frames from Von Maur stores across the country or online from Amazon or the Skylight Frame website. The frames were reportedly sold between April 2018 and March 2019 and retailed for around $160.

Skylight is reportedly offering replacements of the recalled adapters. In order to receive a replacement, consumers need to contact the company. Consumers can contact Skylight via their toll-free number at 888-359-4389 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or through e-mail at NewAdapter@RealTimeResults.net. Consumers can also contact the company for a free replacement through their recall website.
