The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that DeWALT is recalling its utility bars due to a possible injury hazard.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the utility bar can break while it is being used for prying, which can put users at risk for injury.

The recall was initiated after DeWALT received around 56 reports of the utility bars breaking during use. Unfortunately, there have been four reports of people being injured in connection with the bar breaking during use.

The recall was intimated on Sept. 26, 2019 and affected around 145,000 units. Customers who purchased the affected bars are eligible for a refund.

The recall involves DeWALT 40 inch Multi-Functional Utility Bar. They are printed with the name DeWALT and the model number DWHT55293 in black on the yellow end of the bar.

The affected bars are yellow at one end and black at the other, and are designed for both ends to perform different functions. One end is used for prying, and the other is used for gripping boards.

The affected utility bars were sold at hardware stores around the country, including Home Depot. They were also sold through online retailers, including Amazon. The bars were on the market between December 2015 and March 2019, and retailed for between $30 and $40.

The bars were manufactured in Mexico, and were imported by DeWALT Industrial Tool Company of Towson, Maryland.

The recall was conducted voluntarily by DeWALT, as part of the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Fast Track Recall Process. The CPSC explains that recalls in this program are initiated by the companies, who work with the CPSC to “announce the recall and remedy to protect consumers.”

Customers are invited to report an incident involving the product on the CPSC website.

Customers who purchased the affected Utility Bars are eligible for refunds, and can contact DeWALT for their refunds.

DeWALT can be reached toll free at 866-937-9805 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time Monday through Friday. The company can also be reached by email at recall@sbdinc.com

Unfortunately, the DeWALT utility bar is not the only home product that has been recalled recently. In August, the CPSC reported that SunSetter recalled the covers from its awnings after the awning can open unexpectedly and injure consumers.

Recalls can help protect customers from dangerous products by taking them off the market, and can present a way for customers to gain compensation if they purchased a defective or dangerous product without their knowledge.

Mine snapped causing me to severely crush the tip of my finger. It bled all over the work site. It hurt so bad. It broke right at the curve. So painful to be fully loaded and slip. I’m not happy and have been working with a bloody stub. Looks like my nail might survive but is red all over. Do not use these pry bars .
