Sausage product recall overview:

  • Who: Daniele International LLC recalled more than 26 tons of sausages.
  • Why: The sausages may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
  • Where: The sausage product recall is active in the United States.

Daniele International LLC recalled more than 26 tons of sausage products as they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

The U.S. Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS) website published the recall notice on Jan. 29. It applies to approximately 52,914 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) sausage products made on various dates from May 23, 2022, through Nov. 25, 2022.

Daniele shipped the affected products to retail locations nationwide on various dates from Dec. 23, 2022, through Jan. 17, 2023, the sausage recall states.

The recall includes sausage products from brands such as Boar’s Head, Frederik’s, Colameco’s and Del Duca, with some of the products simply sold as salamis and others sold in sampler trays.

Consumers can view the full range of recalled products with sell-by dates and USDA details here. The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 54” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Listeria discovered in sausage amid routine inspection, FSIS says

During routine inspection activities, FSIS discovered listeria monocytogenes on surfaces the product came into contact with, the sausage recall states.

Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems and pregnant women and their newborns, the FSIS says.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products so far, Daniele International says. It is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Meanwhile, FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the sausage product recall states.

These are not the only sausages recalled recently. Last month, FSIS  issued a warning that certain summer sausages produced by Paradise Locker Meats may be contaminated with plastic.
