Regulatory authorities have issued a public health alert for more than 211,000 pounds of raw turkey that may be contaminated with salmonella.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued the updated alert Monday after Plainville Brands, LLC, recalled its ground raw turkey products over concerns that they may have caused Salmonella Hardar illness. The recalled ground turkey includes the following products sold between Dec. 18, 2020 and Dec. 29, 2020:
- Nature’s Promise Free 94% LEAN | 6% FAT Ground Turkey, 1-pound package with a “Use by/freeze/sell by” date of 1/1/21, 1/3/21,1/4/21, 1/8/21 and 1/10/21
- Wegman 94% LEAN | 6% FAT Ground Turkey, 1-pound package with a “Use by/freeze/sell by” date of 1/3/21, 1/4/21, 1/8/21 and 1/10/21
- Wegman 94% LEAN | 6% FAT Ground Turkey, 3-pound packages with a “Use by/freeze/sell by date of 1/3/21, 1/4/21, 1/8/21 and 1/10/21″.
- Plainville Farms Ground White Turkey 93% | 7% Fat, 1-pound packages with a “Use by/freeze/sell by” date of 1/10/21
“Use by/freeze/sell by” dates can be found on the front of the packages. The recalled ground turkey products also have establishment numbers “EST. P-244″ inside the USDA mark of inspection, notes the public health warning.
Though the recalled ground turkey is not likely no longer available for sale, the agency noted that consumers may still have it in their freezers.
“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” states the USDA public health alert. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Retail locations that may receive returned product from consumers should destroy this product immediately.”
Indeed, though salmonella is a common foodborne illness, notes the agency, in some people it can cause severe health effects, including the very young, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other recalls in the interest of consumer safety.
