Pine-Sol recall overview:

  • Who: Clorox recalled a range of Pine-Sol cleaners.
  • Why: The cleaners may contain bacteria that can infect and sicken people with weakened immune systems.
  • Where: The Pine-Sol recall is active in the United States.

Clorox recalled about 37 million bottles of Pine-Sol cleaning products as they may contain bacteria that can infect and sicken people with weakened immune systems.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website published the Pine-Sol recall on Oct. 25.

According to the recall, the affected products may contain bacteria, including pseudomonas aeruginosa, that can enter the body through the nose, eyes or breaks in the skin.

People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by pseudomonas aeruginosa, but people with weakened immune systems or external medical devices face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment, the recall says.

The Pine-Sol recall applies to multiple, including Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners in Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave and Lemon Fresh scents; CloroxPro Pine-Sol All Purpose Cleaners in Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, Lemon Fresh and Orange Energy; and Clorox Professional Pine-Sol Lemon Fresh Cleaners.

Original Pine-Sol is not included in the recall.

Pine-Sol recall says consumers should immediately stop using affected cleaners

So far, testing identified bacteria in recalled products made between January 2021 and September 2022, the company says. Clorox produced approximately 37 million recalled products in that period.

Consumers should immediately stop using the affected products, the Pine-Sol recall says.

Instead, they should take pictures of the 12-digit UPC code and the date code, dispose of the product in its container with household trash and contact Pine-Sol for a full refund of the purchase price with receipt or of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price without receipt.

No injuries have been reported in relation to the cleaning products so far, the company says. Clorox is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The products were sold online at Amazon.com and additional retailer websites and at Walmart, Sam’s Club, Dollar General, Target, Home Depot, BJ’s, Kroger, Dollar Tree, Lowe’s, Publix and other major retailers nationwide for between $2.50 and $12.50.

In related Pine-Sol news, a 2020 class action lawsuit claims Google Shopping listings for Pine-Sol wrongfully represents the products’ ability to kill germs during the coronavirus pandemic. The case was dismissed later that year.

Use the lavender pine sol recently for the first time in years, and my whole house became sick, my husband doesn’t ever get sick and he was very sick, and my 11 year old knee replacement became infected, had to go to doctor and ER because of it on antibiotics, but I strongly believe this could have trigger the infection and sickness, also still have the bottle and I took pictures of it and the numbers.
