A recall has been issued for first-generation Peloton pedals over concerns that they can break unexpectedly and injure riders.
According to the recall notice issued by Peloton Interactive Inc. on Oct. 15, 2020, the pedals affected are the PR70P clip-in model.
These pedals were fitted on Peloton stationary bicycles made between July 2013 and May 2016. The pedals are currently “out of warranty,” however the company warns that first-generation Peloton bikes could still be fitted with them.
Consumers can identify the recalled Peloton pedals using the following factors: “PELOTON” and the company logo are molded into the body of the pedal; “PELOTON” in white is printed on top of the cleat binding along with an orange symbol.
Peloton stationary bikes are sold online and through the company’s showrooms. The price of the bike starts in the thousands. In addition, to access streaming stationary bike spinning classes, consumers must pay an additional monthly fee between $12.99 and $39.
The company says it has received 120 reports of breakages. Sixteen of these reports included injuries to riders. Five riders required stitches as a result of their pedal breaking.
“If your Bike is fitted with a PR70P clip-in pedal, stop using your Bike until you have installed new pedals,” the recall notice warns.
Consumers with recalled Peloton pedals can order free replacement pedals to install on their own or pay $100 for a company tech to come and install them.
Those with questions are encouraged to contact the company.
Recall Reportedly Affects Nearly 30,000
Self reports that the Peloton pedal recall affects 27,000 of the pricey stationary bikes.
The recall reportedly comes at a time of unprecedented growth for the luxury at-home workout company. Indeed, in the wake of gym closures and stay-at-home orders, Peloton reported a 172% increase in growth on July 30, 2020.
According to Fast Company, the recalled pedals can lead to leg injuries. The company is reportedly working with the U.S. Consumer Safety Product Commission on the recall.
Peloton Courts Consumers with New Offerings
The company is also reportedly rolling out a new model of its bike and a treadmill.
Retailing for nearly $2,500, the Peloton Bike+ features a rotating touchscreen, automatic resistance and an improved sound system.
The Peloton treadmill, called the Tread, seeks to capture additional home workout customers.
Peloton’s model consists of pricey home gym equipment with a modern twist — access to streaming workouts and a “community” of other Peloton users. Riders can compete with one another during their workouts in real-time.
The company says it started in 2012 with a “mission to bring immersive and challenging workouts into people’s lives in a more accessible, affordable and efficient way.”
It claims millions of members are able to use its platform to connect and become “the best version” of themselves through “the power of sweat.”
Workout Company Faces Legal Action on Other Fronts
The pedal recall is reportedly not the only issue Peloton Interactive is facing.
Self reports that NordicTrack has filed a lawsuit against the company for patent infringement. NordicTrack reportedly claims Peloton stole NordicTrack tech to put together its Bike+ offering.
The workout company has also faced claims of copyright infringement.
Self reports Peloton agreed to settle a $370 million lawsuit filed by the National Music Publishers Association alleging the company included copyrighted music in its streaming workouts without permission.
Fast Company reports that the pedal recall has not affected the company substantially. Though the stock was down 4%, Fast Company notes that the decline was more likely due to a bump in its target price by Truist Securities.

How do you know if your bike has the defective pedals I bought mine in Nov of 2019. I love my bike and have had no issues but if I need to replace the pedals to avoid injury I would like to do so. I don’t believe I got anything from peloton so I’m hoping that means I’m in the clear but just want to double check. Is there a place to contact?
I have even got caught in my pedals and just about fell off the dam bike trying to get my feet undone. The peloton has a lot of issues that need to be corrected but they are not addressing any of them must making themselves richer and richer
Please add me I have a peloton, I have these pedals and no one has contacted me at all to replace these pedals. I will not use mine and have not used my buckle in pedals since I got my peloton due to I got hurt with them. They are extremely hard to get into and even worse to get out of them. They will hurt more when using them, due to your feet are basically at the bikes mercy, you just can not get out of them easily at all, I have hurt my feet, ankles, toes, knees etc etc using the pedals so I stopped and would just ride my bike without snapping my feet, shoes in. The shoes they offer as well are not comfortable, very awkward, makes a ride uncomfortable
