Nestle Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental recall overview:

  • Why: The dog food may have overly high vitamin D levels.
  • Where: The dog food recall is active in the United States.

(Feb. 13, 2023)

Nestle Purina recalled select lots of its Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental prescription dry dog food due to potentially elevated vitamin D levels after two dogs were made sick by eating the food.

The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website posted the recall Feb. 8. It applies to Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) 8- and 20-pound bags with UPC codes 38100 19190 (8-pound bags) and 38100 19192 (20-pound bags).

According to the recall, the prescription dry dog food has potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Ingestion of elevated levels of vitamin D can lead to health issues depending on the levels and the length of exposure, the Nestle Purina recall states.

“Vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling to renal (kidney) dysfunction,” according to the dog food recall.

Purina initiated the recall after receiving two reports of confirmed cases of a dog exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the food. Once taken off the food, each of the dogs recovered, the company says.

Purina is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental distributed nationwide, dog food recall states

The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals and other select retailers with the ability to validate a prescription, the Nestle Purina recall states.

Nestle Purina advises pet owners who purchased bags of the recalled Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental to immediately stop feeding it to their dogs and throw it away in a container where no other animals, including wildlife, can get to it.

If signs such as weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite or increased thirst or urination occurred in their dog while eating this diet, pet owners should contact their vet, according to the dog food recall

Vets should remove and destroy the affected product from their inventory.

In related news, Nestle Purina recalled some of its prescription wet dog food in December as the cans were incorrectly packaged with a different product.

As much as they charge for this special dog food I’ve been feeding my baby and she been house broken for a while…couldn’t figure out why she had to go more than normal but thought it was because she was steady drinking water or whatever liquid around. My mom thought I was thirsting her because she seemed so dehydrated… now I know why

    1. Terra R Bean says:

Our Peanut was subscribed this food due to allergies and we could not figure out why she was sooooo thirsty. She now has an apot to check her kidneys due to this food causing kidney failure and she has been on this food exclusively for over 6 months. These pets are our children does Purina know how awful this is? We are heart broken and extremely worried about our baby. Please add us to the lawsuit.
