  • Why: The vehicles are at risk of an engine compartment fire.
  • Where: The Kia Niro recall is active in the United States.

Kia recalled certain Niro and Niro Plug-in Hybrids vehicles as they are at risk of an engine compartment fire.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website published the recall July 31. It applies to 121,411 Kia 2017-2022 Niro and 2018-2022 Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles.

According to the recall, fluid may leak into the printed circuit board inside the hydraulic clutch actuator (HCA), which can result in an engine compartment fire.

“A fluid contaminated printed circuit board may lead to an electrical short circuit, thereby increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire while driving,” the Kia Niro recall states.

The hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) warning light may warn drivers of the issue, according to the recall, which comes after several reports of melting and thermal damage in Kia Niro HCAs.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Kia offers free repair, Niro recall states

Kia will notify all owners of the recalled vehicles by first-class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer for a free repair, the recall states. The automaker expects to mail owner notification letters Sept. 29, 2023.

Kia will instruct dealers to inspect the HCA and replace it, if necessary, the Niro recall states. Dealers will also install a new HCA fuse with one of a different capacity to mitigate the potential risk of fire caused by an electrical short circuit.

Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred under its general reimbursement plan.

Kia recalls and lawsuits have increased recently in the wake of a nationwide TikTok trend that showed how Kia and Hyundai vehicles can be easily stolen using only a USB cable. In April, attorneys general from 18 states asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall certain vehicles manufactured from between 2011 and 2022 in response to the apparent wave of vehicle thefts.
