Check your pantry: The J.M. Smucker Company recalled certain Jif brand peanut butter products as they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recall comes amid a multistate outbreak of salmonella senftenberg infections linked to certain Jif peanut butter products produced at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky.
JIf issued the recall May 20, and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website posted a federal and state health authority investigation notice of the salmonella outbreak.
The recall applies to all Jif brand peanut butter products that have lot code numbers between 1274425 – 2140425 where the first seven digits end with 425. Consumers can view product photos here.
“This product has a two-year shelf life so consumers should check any Jif peanut butter in their home,” the recall notice says. “FDA recommends that if you have used the recalled Jif brand peanut butter… you should wash and sanitize surfaces and utensils that could have touched the peanut butter.”
Jif Peanut Butter Recall Notice Says 14 Illnesses Reported Nationwide
J.M. Smucker distributed the recalled peanut butter nationwide in retail stores and other outlets, according to the recall notice. So far, consumers have reported 14 illnesses, as well as two hospitalizations, that are potentially related to the peanut butter.
The last illness onset was May 1, 2022. The states with reported cases so far include Arkansas (1), Georgia (2), Illinois (1), Massachusetts (1), Missouri (1), Ohio (1), North Carolina (1), New York (1), South Carolina (1), Texas (2), Virginia (1) and Washington (1).
The FDA conducted whole genome sequencing analysis on an environmental sample collected at the company’s Lexington facility in 2010, it says. The analysis shows that this 2010 environmental sample matches the strain causing illnesses in this current outbreak.
“Epidemiologic evidence indicates that Jif brand peanut butter produced in the J.M. Smucker Company facility located in Lexington, KY, is the likely cause of illnesses in this outbreak,” the agency says.
J.M Smucker is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
The news comes after consumers filed a class action lawsuit last year against the J.M. Smucker Company, which sells food under the Smucker’s, JIF, Adams, Laura Scudders and Sahale Snacks brands, alleging it misleads consumers by falsely advertising the amount of protein in Smucker’s Uncrustables and other products.
