May vehicle recalls overview:
- Who: Hyundai, Honda, Ford and Volkswagen issued vehicle recalls in May.
- Why: The automakers initiated the recalls over concerns involving defective fuel pumps, faulty tail lights, defective camera displays and electric wiring.
- Where: The vehicle recalls affect consumers nationwide.
Automakers Hyundai, Honda, Ford and Volkswagen issued vehicle recalls last month over concerns broadly involving defective fuel pumps, faulty tail lights, defective camera displays, and issues with short circuiting and electric wiring.
An automaker may choose to issue a recall if it determines a vehicle poses a safety risk to drivers, passengers, pedestrians and/or others on the road.
Ford recalls Maverick vehicles over concerns rear taillights can fail to illuminate
Ford issued a recall for more than 240,000 model year 2022-2024 Ford Maverick pickup trucks last month over concerns their rear taillights could fail to illuminate.
The automaker says the defect, which includes Ford Maverick pickup trucks produced between Feb. 3, 2021, and March 21, 2024, is caused by an issue with the body control module on the recalled pickup trucks.
“Rear position lamps that fail to illuminate can cause reduced visibility to other drivers in dark conditions, increasing the risk of a collision,” the Ford Maverick recall says.
Honda recalls nearly 190,000 Ridgeline pickup trucks over electric wiring concerns
Honda issued a recall for nearly 190,000 model year 2020-2024 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks last month over concerns the electric wiring for their tailgate’s rearview camera could break if exposed to freezing water and salt.
The automaker says the camera wiring harnesses in the recalled Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks allow freezing water and salt to enter the woven twisted tube, which could potentially cause cracks and breakage within the tube.
“Broken wiring in the tailgate harness may result in a failure to display the RVC image, which may affect the driver’s view and increase the risk of a backup collision or injury,” the Honda Ridgeline recall says.
Nearly 80,000 VW ID.4 vehicles recalled over rearview camera display concerns
Volkswagen issued a recall for nearly 80,000 model year 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles in May over concerns their rearview camera displays may fail to display an image or be delayed, causing an increased accident risk.
The automaker says the recalled Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles contain software versions created prior to the introduction of “certain bug fixes and robustness improvements.”
“If the rearview camera display is delayed or not displaying an image, there is an increased risk of crash or injury when the vehicle is backing up,” the Volkswagen ID.4 recall says.
Hyundai recalls Elantra, Venue, Kona vehicles over short circuit, fuel pump concerns
Hyundai issued a recall for more than 13,000 model year 2024 Hyundai Elantra, Venue and Kona vehicles last month over concerns they could experience a sudden loss of motive power due to a short circuit.
The automaker says a short circuit could cause the recalled Hyundai Elantra, Venue and Kona vehicles to experience a sudden loss of motive power and/or potentially cause their malfunction indicator light to illuminate.
“Sudden, unexpected loss of motive power could increase the risk of a crash, especially at high speeds,” the Hyundai Elantra, Venue and Genesis recall says.
Hyundai issued a separate recall in mid-April for more than 30,000 model year 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles over concerns their fuel pump assembly contains an impeller that can deform under high heat and cause the fuel pump to shutdown.
The automaker says a deformed fuel pump assembly could lead to interference with the fuel pump housing, which would result in a mechanical resistance that could cause the fuel pump to shutdown.
“A shutdown of the fuel pump could restrict fuel flow to the engine, resulting in a sudden reduction or loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Hyundai Genesis recall says.
