Honda announces recall on Odyssey, Pilot, Passport vehicles due to rearview camera defect

Honda has recalled more than 1.1 million Odyssey, Pilot and Passport vehicles due to an issue with the rearview camera display. 

The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website on June 15. It applies to 1,198,280 model years 2018-2023 Odyssey, 2019-2022 Pilot and 2019-2023 Passport vehicles.

According to the recall, due to a faulty Media Oriented Systems Transport communication connector, the rearview camera image may not appear on the display. 

As such, the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal safety standards.

“A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver’s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,” the recall states.

As of June 8, 2023, Honda has received 273,870 warranty claims related to the issue, and no reports of injuries or deaths related to it, the defect report states.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Dealers to replace defective hardware free of charge

Dealers will replace the defective cable harness and install a straightening cover over the vehicle cable connector, free of charge, the company said. 

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 24, 2023. 

Meanwhile, American Honda Motor Co. is facing a class action lawsuit over problems with the electric power steering in the Honda Civic.
