Gerber infant formula recall overview:

  • Who: Perrigo recalled some of its Gerber Good Start SoothePro powdered infant formula.
  • Why: The product may contain cronobacter sakazakii.
  • Where: The Gerber infant formula recall is active in the United States.

Perrigo recalled some of its Gerber Good Start SoothePro powdered infant formula as the product may contain cronobacter sakazakii.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the recall March 17.

It applies to certain lots of Gerber Good Start SoothePro infant formula manufactured at the company’s Gateway Eau Claire, Wisconsin, manufacturing facility from Jan. 2, 2023, to Jan. 18, 2023.

Perrigo recalled the product “out of an abundance of caution” due to the potential presence of cronobacter sakazakii, the company says.

No distributed product tested positive for the presence of this bacteria, no adverse events have been reported and no other products manufactured at the Wisconsin facility or any other of Perrigo’s facilities are affected by the recall, the company says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Dispose of product, ask for refund, Gerber recall states

Perrigo did not tell consumers why it conducted the recall. However, it says cronobacter sakazakii can cause fever, poor feeding, excessive crying or low energy and other serious symptoms in premature infants, infants under 2 months of age or infants with weakened immune systems

This product was sold at retailers across the United States, according to the infant formula recall.

Consumers who purchased the product after March 5, 2023, should look for these lot codes and “use-by” dates, which can be found on the bottom of the package.

“Any consumers who purchased product with matching codes should discontinue use and dispose of the product,” the Gerber infant formula recall says.

Consumers can request refunds for impacted products, it added.

In August, Gerber was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging it makes “strictly prohibited” nutrient content claims on its baby and toddler food products to profit from parents’ desire to buy food that provides health benefits for their kids.
