Weis Market Ready-To-Eat General Tso Chicken Meals Alert Overview:
- Who: The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for some Weis Markets General Tso Chicken meals
- Why: The meals may contain undeclared milk
- Where: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia
In seven states, the United States food safety inspectors have issued a public health alert for certain ready-to-eat chicken meals sold at Weis Markets.
In a notice posted May 13 to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website, the FSIS said it is issuing an alert for certain General Tso Chicken meals sold in Weis Markets’ deli sections.
The alert was issued due to the concerns the products may contain milk, a known allergen, which is not declared on the store’s finished product label.
“FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with an allergy to milk are aware that these products should not be consumed,” the notice states.
The meals were prepared, labeled and sold in the Deli area at Weis Markets stores between April 13, 2022, and May 11, 2022. The products have sell-by dates of April 13, 2022, through May 15, 2022, and the containers are labeled “Weis GENERAL TSO CHICKEN FAMILY MEAL,” “Weis GENERAL TSO CHICKEN SMALL MEAL,” and “Weis GENERAL TSO MEAL.”
The products were sold at Weis Markets’ retail delis in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Weis Markets Reported the Issue
The problem was discovered when Weis Markets in Sunbury, Pa., reported that it had been using correctly labeled, USDA inspected and passed chicken products containing milk ingredients but did not update their in-store labels for General Tso Chicken meals to include milk as an ingredient, the notice says.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions to the product so far.
The FSIS said it has verified the affected products are no longer available for sale but is “concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators.”
“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
Meanwhile, the FSIS has issued a public health alert for certain raw ground beef products sold at Whole Foods nationwide after consumers complained of finding hard plastic in the beef products.
