Fiido Folding E-Bike Recall Overview

  • Who: Fiido is recalling 2,989 of its X folding electric bikes.
  • Why: The folding structure is not strong enough to stand long-term use in complex situations, resulting in multiple bikes breaking in half.
  • Where: The recall is worldwide.

Hong Kong-based electric transport company Fiido is recalling 2,989 of its folding electric bikes as the bikes can break in half.

Fiido issued the recall of all Fiido X folding electric bikes April 13 on its website while also announcing an upgrade plan for the bikes.

It says it suspended all sales of the Fiido X immediately after receiving a faulty frame report from a United States consumer Apr. 3 and another report on April 7.

There have been multiple reports of the bike snapping in half, Electrek reports.

“We’ve paid high attention with this issue and started the investigation and arranged more stringent tests for Fiido X in Fiido R&D lab,” the company says. “Based on the fact that this failure is a serious security issue, we informed all X users at once and urged all X users to stop using X provisionally.”

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Fiido X Recall: Company Has Upgraded Folding Structure To Fix Problem

All Fiido X folding electric bikes manufactured between September 2021 and March 2022 are being recalled.

The cause of the problem is that the folding structure is not strong enough to stand long-term use in complex situations, the company says. Also, defects in packaging design have resulted in the risk of damage in the transportation.

“Considering various factors, Fiido team upgraded the folding structure of the Fiido X frame that aim at the weak area of the frame to ensure the product safety of Fiido X and reduce potential risk,” the company says.

The new Fiido X frame will be fully upgraded and more rigorously tested with twice the EN15194 certification standard to avoid a similar situation from happening again, the company says.

Fiido is offering free recall services and corresponding user protection plans to all X users as of April 12, it said. The company will directly contact all affected customers advising them to make an appointment with the support team.

“This incident is a big alert for us,” the company says. “The entire Fiido team attached great importance to it and the broken Fiido X will be hung on the wall of our R&D dept to remind us how to design product.”

Meanwhile, around 90,000 bike helmets sold at Walmart, Best Buy, Segway and Amazon are being recalled in two separate recalls due to posing a risk of head injury to cyclists if they fall.
