Stellantis has issued a new Fiat recall for certain 2017-2020 Spider vehicles.
The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Sept. 18. It applies to 15,835 model year 2017-2020 Fiat 124 Spider vehicles.
According to the Fiat recall, a software error in the air bag control module may cause the front air bags to deploy with excessive force during a crash.
“An air bag that deploys with excessive force can increase the risk of injury,” the Fiat recall says.
The issue also makes the vehicles non-compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208. This occupant crash protection safety standard requires certain performance related to neck injury criteria during 26 km/h frontal impact testing.
“Suspect vehicles may deploy the dual stage, rather than single stage front airbag which can result in the neck injury criteria not being met,” the Fiat recall says.
According to the recall, the issue is not a defect, but a design flaw. Dealers will update the air bag control module software, free of charge, Chrysler (FCA LLC) said.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Nov. 7, 2024.
In 2022, Fiat Chrysler reached a class action settlement made to resolve claims it sold certain Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Ram and Fiat vehicles with an engine defect. The plaintiffs in that case claimed Fiat Chrysler sold vehicles with a design defect that caused their engines to burn off more oil than what would be normal.

I was advised re the Lusso seatbelt in October 2024 during routine maintenance. I was told that the dealer would call when the required parts were received. This is now about six months later and no call. Can I ever expect that this will be repaired as stipulated by the dealership or is some sort of legal action required for Chrysler to fulfill their obligation?
