Dole has reportedly recalled its Sesame Asian Chopped Salad Kit over concerns the product contains allergens that are not disclosed on the packaging.

According to the company’s recall announcement, a dressing and topping kit meant for another product was used in the Sesame Asian Chopped Salad Kit. The company says the replacement was unintentional; however, the dressing and topping kit contains an allergen — eggs — that consumers are not warned of on packages of the recalled salad.

“No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported to date in association with the recall,” Dole said. “However, people who have an allergy to eggs may have a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product or products containing eggs.”

The recalled products are Dole Sesame Asian Chopped Salad Kits with a UPC of 0-71430-00035-9, a “Best If Used By Date” of Jan. 15, 2021, and lot codes of B364016 or B364017.

According to a picture of the product posted on the FDA website, the salad comes in a bag. In addition to lettuce, cabbage, kale, carrots and green onions, the salad kit comes with garlic wontons, sliced almonds and sesame ginger vinaigrette dressing.

The recalled salad kits were sold in Alaska, California, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Utah, according to New Food Magazine.

Dole™ Sesame Asian Chopped Salad KitAccording to the company, the best-by date is in the upper corner of the salad bag and the UPC is in the bottom right corner.

“Consumers are advised to check product they have in their homes and discard any product matching the production description, UPC codes, product lot code and Best if Used by Date listed above,” states the company’s announcement, which also says consumers should even throw away remaining salad they may have already started eating.

According to the Daily Voice, no other Dole salad kits or products are included in this recall.

“Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. is coordinating closely with regulatory officials,” the company said.

Consumers with questions are encouraged to contact Dole by phone at 1-800-356-3111. The phone line is open 24 hours a day.

The Miami Herald reports consumers can also take the recalled salad kits to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Egg Allergies

Indeed, the eggs inadvertently included in the recalled Dole salad mix can present an issue to consumers who have an egg allergy or serve it to someone with the allergy.

According to the Mayo Clinic, eggs are one of the most common allergy-producing foods for children; however, most children outgrow their egg allergy during their teen years.

Symptoms of an egg allergy include skin rashes and hives, as well as congestion, nausea and vomiting. The Mayo Clinic notes reactions can occur several minutes to a few hours after consuming eggs. In addition, some people can have a severe allergic reaction to eggs, anaphylaxis, which can cause death.
