Abbott Nutrition initiated a recall last month for 720 Similac Alimentum bottles of formula distributed in Ohio and Michigan over concerns the packaging for the product was defective.

The Abbott recall affected the company’s Similac Alimentum baby formula packaged in 32 fl. oz. reclosable plastic bottles and sold in a case containing six bottles, Food Safety News reports.

Similac Alimentum baby formula affected by the Abbott recall, which was posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Sept. 7 and remains ongoing, hasa best-by date of June 1, 2023.

The current Similac recall comes on the heels of a February recall in which Abbott recalled a large number of its Similac, Alimentum and EleCare powdered infant formulas over concerns they were linked to several infant illnesses, including one death.

As of this writing, the FDA says it has linked formulas produced by Abbott to a total of three infant deaths and five infections of cronobacter that resulted in hospitalization, Food Safety News reports.

Officials linked infections cronobacter sakazakii and salmonella newport to formula produced by Abbott at its Sturgis, Michigan, baby formula plant facility, which the company was forced to temporarily close.

FDA finds cronobacter contamination at Sturgis facility following Abbott recall

The FDA said it found several positive results for cronobacter contamination while doing an onsite inspection of Abbott’s Sturgis facility, which produced infant formula products that were distributed across the country.

Abbott’s infant formula recall would ultimately be responsible for a nationwide baby formula shortage that greatly interrupted the availability and supply of the product for consumers across the country.

In March, the FDA released a preliminary report on Abbott’s facility in Sturgis, which the agency had been inspecting since late January, accusing the company of not maintaining sanitary conditions at the manufacturing plant.

The FDA determined in its report that Abbott failed to maintain clean surfaces used in handling and producing powdered formula produced at its Sturgis plant and that the company did not have a process in place to ensure contamination would not occur.
