Recall Alert: 145K Kia Souls and Seltos Recalled for Engine Fire Risk

Late-model Kia Seltos and Souls are the focus of a recall notice issued Monday concerning an engine problem that can lead to stalling or even fire.

In their fourth fire-related recall of the year, Kia says that the vehicle safety problem originates with the oil rings in 125,400 model year 2020 and 2021 Souls and 21,849 model year 2021 Seltos. The part is too hard, according to the recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and can potentially cause engine damage and excessive oil consumption.

Warning signs include an engine knock or the oil light turning on in the dashboard. Continued operation of Kia’s exhibiting these problems could cause further damage and even a puncture in the engine block. The puncture could leak oil into the exhaust, presenting the risk of an engine fire, warns the automaker.

Indeed, four reports of engine fires led to the recall of the Kia Souls and Kia Seltos, says the recall notice. Owners will begin to be notified by the automaker in June. Owners can take their recalled Kias to a dealership for a free inspection and, if necessary, repair.

Although this is not a class action lawsuit, Top Class Actions monitors potentially dangerous vehicle recalls to keep consumers informed of potential vehicle safety defects.

This warning, recently issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), adds to the growing list of Kia and Hyundai vehicles recalled over fire risks. Hyundai is a different automaker, but is owned by the same parent company as Kia and many of their vehicles share the same design, parts, and engineering.

Indeed, a number of Kia and Hyundai vehicles have been subject to fire risk recalls recently. In December, Kia announced that the company would be recalling almost 300,000 vehicles over a risk of fire in the engine compartment. At the same time, 130,000 Hyundais were recalled over stalling and engine fires after more than 3,100 engine fires were reported, some involving injuries and one resulting in death.

Consumers can check to see if their vehicle has been recalled on the NHTSA website.

yes my manager drives an kia soul and one of the staff members take me to therepy every two weeks the thing is the engine cuts out when increasing the speed of the car I do not want to be in the car when the engine dies out is there such an thing

  2. Hayley Warner says:

My 2013 Kia burned all the way down.

  3. Brenda Bevins says:

My 2014 Kia Soul had been nothing but trouble, 2019 engine stalled in the middle of highway knocking and smoke pouring from under the hood,
October 2022 same identical thing happened again. Kia will do nothing to help, we replaced the first engine but can’t afford to do it again, so it sitting in driveway and we still owe approximately 5,000 dollars on it.

We purchased our son a 2015 Kia Soul and have had nothing but headaches with this car.. We had to replace a catalytic converter costing approx $1400.. Engine went about 6 months later. Had to pay $6,500 plus for a rebuilt engine 10/2020 at Kia Dealership.. Most recently 12/2021 took Car back to Kia Dealership and found out car needed a manifold replacement, back brakes and back rotars. Otherwise, car was cleared as in good condition. Upon repair/replacement costing us $1,672, son driving vehicle for two days, vehicle began to lose acceleration on highway, from 40 mph to 20mph. He had to safely pull over into a gas station.. Afterwards was able to drive slowly to an Auto Zone nearby. Auto Zone said their diagnostics was showing no problem, and no engine light warning, when it obviously was a problem with the Car.. They couldn’t believe their diagnostic findings compared to what was happening with the car. Car had to be towed to Mechanic shop found out catalytic converter went again.. There must be an issue with the engine again and possibly over heating to burn out a converter after two days of being driven.. This makes absolutely no sense at all.. As if we are rebuilding a 6 year old car all over again after purchasing it brand New for our son’s college graduation.. It has truly been costly through out the past few years. One thing after another..

    I. Ought my used Kia Soul 2015 and 6 weeks later the oil drained out, gasket blew, and caught on fire leaving me stranded on a dark secluded highway alone with kids. Kia told me 6k to fix but I just bought it for 7k. As a single mom I lost everything I ever saved that day and almost lost my job. Kia didn’t cover anything even under extended warranty. They said it caught fire the “wrong way”.

  6. Mo Huckler says:

Our daughter was driving our 2015 Kia Soul and the engine caught fire underneath and she had no idea! She pulled over when smoke entered the cab. Two good semaritans pulled over with fire extinguishers telling her to get out. The car burst into flames after she got out. We were on no recall list for an engine fire.

  7. Elle says:

My vehicle has died twice in the middle of a highway. Both times was because the transmission needed to be replaced. For a new vehicle to need not one but TWO new transmissions within a 6-month span is ridiculous. The idiots at the dealership do not care that my car almost got plowed by a truck as my car sat dead in the middle of a highway. The dealership will not terminate my lease nor give me a new/replacement vehicle. I don’t feel safe in my vehicle and am in constant fear. I hate that I will have to deal with this for another 4 years until the lease ends. Oh yeah… my car died again tonight. Looking forward to calling the idiots at the dealership first thing in the morning. Bet they won’t care how I won’t be able to get to work with no vehicle. DO NOT BUY A KIA.

I bought a kia seltos a year ago this month and had nothing but problems with it. It stalls when driving, turning corners and even on the highway also not to mention jerks while doing the stalling. I brought it in 3 times because of this and the time before last a computer chip had to be updated. This is ridiculous that a new car does all this! Very disappointing!!

  9. Mark smith says:

We bought a 2015 kia 2 yrs ago and the recall on the engine is not being honored by the dealership and kia motors.

  10. laura dumsky says:

    I purchased a new 21 Kia Seltos
My car has been in the shop over five times since September-when I purchased it I now have a recall letter stating that my piston rings could be bad, the fear of driving my car especially with my kids is very unsettling not knowing if the engine will stall on the highway or if it’s going to catch fire. I already asked for a trade-in and the dealership told me I will lose money
I even bought the extended warranty when I purchased the vehicle
