Torn & Glasser has recalled 7,464 12-ounce tubs of its dark chocolate espresso beans after finding out the packets actually contained dark chocolate-covered walnuts.
The company announced the Torn & Glasser recall on April 13 after it was discovered the walnut products had the wrong label placed on the container.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall notice says that an investigation indicates that the wrong label was used by production staff.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product,” says the notice.
The mislabeled containers were sold at Kroger stores in 30 states under the banners Kroger, Arlan’s, Fred Meyer, Smiths, Food For Less, Fry’s Food Stores, Ralphs, Dillons, Roundy’s Chicago, and Roundy’s Mariano’s beginning March 3, 2021.
The affected units have a UPC code of 0 72488 99868 1. Affected units are lot number 777739 and have a best before date of November 19, 2021. The packet has a green leaf logo on the top.
Customers who purchased an affected tub of the Torn & Glasser chocolate-covered walnuts are urged to destroy it or return it for a full refund.
Consumers with questions may contact the company at (213) 627-6496 Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. or 1622 East Olympic Boulevard, Los Angeles, California.
Walnuts are categorized as tree nuts, and according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, tree nut allergy is one of the eight most common food allergies, affecting roughly 0.5 to 1 percent of the U.S. population.
Reactions to tree nuts can be severe — including life-threatening anaphylaxis — and individuals with a tree nut allergy should have epinephrine available at all times, the ACAAI says on its website.
Several other food products have recently faced recalls for undisclosed nuts. Earlier this month, Pennsylvania’s Rise Baking Company voluntarily recalled two of its cakes — Harris Teeter Brand 8” 3-layer Cookies and Crème Cake and Dawn Food Products Brand 7” 2-layer Vanilla Bean Waterfall Cake — due to undeclared hazelnuts.
In January, snack manufacturers think! and Interpac Technologies announced a voluntary recall of its Protein + Fiber and Farmer’s Market Berry Crumble oatmeal products after an undeclared almond was found in a pack by a consumer.
Torn & Glasser does not currently face a class action lawsuit over the undeclared nuts, but Top Class Actions tracks recalls in the interest of consumer safety.
