Beware consumers with tree nut allergies, a certain oatmeal product may contain undeclared nuts.
Snack manufacturer think! and Interpac Technologies announced a voluntary recall of its Protein + Fiber and Farmer’s Market Berry Crumble oatmeal products after an almond was found in a pack by a consumer, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted consumers on Thursday.
Neither Interpac Technologies or think! currently face legal action over the undeclared nuts, but Top Class Actions tracks recalls because they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Cases of anaphylactic shock are most commonly caused by tree nuts or peanuts for those who suffer from nut allergies, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI).
The recalled products were made in the U.S. and sold nationwide through various retailers and online, according to the FDA voluntary recall alert.
The recall applies to the 1.76-ounce cups sold individually or in six-packs with the following UPC codes: 753656711836 or 753656712338, with the following best by dates stamped at the bottom of the bowl: N15OCT21, N16OCT21, N19OCT21, N20OCT21, or N21OCT21
To date, no allergic reactions requiring hospitalizations or the use of epipens have been reported linked to this voluntary recall, the FDA alert adds.
An investigation into the facility producing the voluntarily recalled think! branded oatmeal packs revealed an unintentional error in the production process caused the undeclared pecans and almonds to get into the products.
Shoppers who bought think! oatmeal cups have been advised not to consume them and can return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further information consumers can call think! customer service at 866-98THINK or send an email to customerservice@thinkproducts.com.
The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 requires products to be clearly labeled if they contain these potentially harmful ingredients. According to the FDA recall all of the affected products include the following statement on the packaging: “MADE IN A FACILITY THAT PROCESSES…TREE NUTS.”
The ACAAI advises consumers with tree nut allergies to read labels carefully and to see a specialist if a tree nut allergy is suspected.
Emergency medical providers and allergy specialists advise those with serious allergies to seek immediate help if experiencing anaphylaxis, identify the allergen, follow up with a specialist and carry epinephrine for emergencies.
Recalls in the past have often led to class action lawsuits or settlements. Currently, Whole Foods faces a class action alleging the store doesn’t accurately label allergens like tree nuts on their products.
