Dole issues third bagged salad recall of year

New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin consumers with food allergies listen up. Dole voluntarily recalled its Sunflower Crunch Chopped Salad Kits because some have the wrong dressing and toppings, which include undisclosed allergens.

Similar to two recalls issued by Dole within the past six weeks, lot Nos. W02702A and W02702B of the Sunflower Crunch Chopped Salad Kit with a best by date on the bag of 2-11-2021 reportedly contain wheat and nut ingredients that are not declared on the package. Dole says that a packaging mistake led to the wrong dressing and toppings being included in the bagged salad kit.

“No illnesses nor allergic reactions have been reported to date in association with the recall,” states the company, according to the FDA recall notice. “However, people who have an allergy to wheat and tree nuts may have a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.”

Though there is currently no class action lawsuit filed over the Dole bagged salad kit recalls, Top Class Actions will monitor developments to help keep consumers informed about potentially dangerous recalls.

Consumers who purchased the recalled Dole bagged salad kits can return them to the store for a full refund.

Three Dole Bagged Salad Recalls This Year

This is the third  recall issued by the fresh food producer, who recalled both its Sesame Asian Chopped Salad Kit and its Endless Summer Salad Kit over undeclared allergens.

The Sesame Asian Chopped Salad Kit was recalled in early January because certain lots of the product contained the wrong dressing and topping kit. At the time, the company said the replacement was unintentional; however, the dressing and topping kit contains an allergen — eggs — that consumers are not warned of on packages of the recalled salad.

Dole’s Endless Summer Salad Kit was recalled at the end of January after it was discovered that an error led to the wrong dressing in two lots of the product. The dressing reportedly contained fish and egg, but these ingredients were not disclosed on the package.

Undeclared Allergens

Reportedly, approximately 15 million Americans have food allergies, including 5 million children. Reactions can range from mild to severe, according to the Food Allergy and Research Organization which also notes that the rate of severe allergic reactions to food increased by over 300% between 2007 and 2016.

Food and Drug Administration regulations require that manufacturers identify eight of the most major allergens on the labels of products, including peanuts, milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, and soybean.
