A former Petland employee has accused the pet vendor of selling sick puppies, putting other pets and humans at risk of infection.

The Petland class action lawsuit also claims that the company knowingly misrepresents the puppies it sells.

Plaintiffs Dawn Singleton and her daughter Katie say Petland knowingly sells puppies infected by a bacteria called Campylobacter, a bacteria that can commonly causes diarrhea, and in more severe cases, can cause arthritis or can be life-threatening.

Katie claims that she worked as a “puppy counselor” for Petland in December 2017, and as a regular part of her work, cleaned up sick puppies’ vomit and bloody excrement in the store. She says that later, her mother purchased a miniature Schnauzer puppy from Petland.

According to the Petland sick dogs class action lawsuit, mere days after her mother purchased the dog, Katie developed a 104.7 degree fever. She says that she was hospitalized and was diagnosed with a Campylobacter infection.

Allegedly, Petland knowingly sells puppies and kittens sourced from puppy and kitten mills, that they know are prone to illness and defects.

The Petland class action lawsuit says the pet vendor sells sham warranties and services along with the puppies that are “not worth the paper they are printed on.”

The Singletons argue that “at its core, Petland’s misrepresentations allow it to charge premium prices for puppies and kittens that customers believe are ‘certified’ to be healthy and backed up by warranties and services” when in fact, the vendor knows that the animals are not healthy in many cases.

The Petland class action lawsuit claims that more than 100 people were infected with the Campylobacter infection because of the sick puppies linked to Petland.

Supporting their claim, they note that the Center for Disease Control investigated a Campylobacter outbreak in 2018 that made 113 people ill in 17 states.

The agency determined that “contact with puppies sold through Petland stores were a likely source of this outbreak.” Allegedly, the CDC discovered that the outbreak took place between January 2016 and January 2018.

The Petland bacterial outbreak class action lawsuit also claims that Petland’s act of selling infected puppies led customers to not get what they paid for.

The Singletons note that Petland charges around $2,000 to $3,000 per pet.

Allegedly, the customers do not anticipate being “put at tremendous risk” by the pets and this risk is caused by Petland’s misrepresentations of the dogs and cats.

The Singletons are represented by David James Worley and James M. Evangelista of Evangelista Worley LLC and by Irwin Marc Ellerin.

The Petland Sick Puppies Class Action Lawsuit is Singleton, et al. v. Petland Mall of Georgia LLC, et al., Case No. 1:19-cv-01477, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

UPDATE: On June 28, 2019, PAWSitive asked a federal court to dismiss them from the Petland class action lawsuit.

I need to be added to this lawsuit please. I purchased a Maltese for $5100 from Petland Waterford Lakes on August 8th and took her to the vet August 10th because she had non stop seizures. The vet stated she had distemper and only had 20% chance of living. As of right now she’s staying at the vet overnight fighting for little life. She also tested positive for COVID. The vet stated the dog was unfit for sale at time of purchase. The sales agent never informed me of any deformities of the dog only that her knees were fragile and to not let her jump from high places

  6. LaTrice says:

    Hi,

Please add me to this as well. I purchased a puppy from the Petland in Kendall about 3 weeks ago and she has been sick ever since and she has now been diagnosed with Giardia. I have been told that she is contagious and could get anyone in my house sick. Petland is doing basically nothing about it they have a horrible refund and return policy. They are definitely selling sick puppies because they are not doing their jobs to keep them well. I extremely upset with the options I have been presented for the amount of money they charge.

    1. Rachel says:

I too purchased a puppy 3 weeks ago from Petland. We had a vet visit today and she was diagnosed with Giardia. We had to purchase two types of medication to cure this.

I purchased a toy poodle from Petland Kendall Aug 7, 2019. They sent me to their designated Vet within 2 days as suggested. This alone is a scam and a conflict of interest because it’s in their best interest to not diagnose the dog properly within the first 12 days. They diagnosed him negative for everything. I clearly advised he had a cough. At 4 months he was only 2.6lbs and severely bony. A few days later to took him to my Desired vet where they diagnosed him with Giardia And kennel cough. Solutions only covers meds and no testing so of course I spent a bunch of $ out of pocket because it took 5 rounds of medications to get rid of the Giardia. I had to give my dog aerosol for several weeks. Today he is having 3 surgeries. The vet told me all 3 issues are very typical of puppy mill dogs that are sold sick. His k-9 baby teeth never fell out and all his adult teeth are now in so he has crowing. He limps because his rear patellas are bad. He is having both knees operated today and when I first bought him I decided I wanted to stud him out so I can have another puppy for myself in the future. Well so much for that idea. He was born with cryptocordism (1 testicle didn’t decend). This can cause early onset cancer so he is also being neutered. For this surgery he needs a second incision on his abdomen as when a female dog is spayed because they need to search for the lost testicle in his stomach. My poor doggy. He is now my life and like my baby. I have never owned a dog I can love and be affectionate with because I suffer from skin allergies. That is the only reason I decided it was ok to pay $4500 for a dog. I have spent significantly more then on that vet bills. I did it because I believed their fake advertisement about getting their dogs from the top 2% of breeders in the country. I had no idea what a sham they are. They have good reviews online because they corner you and ask you to make an immediate review online just before you finalize purchase. They never disclosed his medical history. Sadly people don’t go back in to revise it. I would love to get this company to shut down and pay everyone who experienced such damages to be compensated for the financially detrimental and heart breaking experience we’ve had.

Has anyone received a response to this thread? Is there an actual open case against petland? I’m skeptical because it looks like this is an old thread for something that already happened through Petland of GA. Feedback is greatly appreciated because of not I want to start a new class action suit. I’d be ok with doing research to see who can do this.

I purchased a puppy 3 weeks ago and went to their vet today. She was diagnosed with Giardia and they refused to give her a rabies vaccine because she is ONE day away from being 16 weeks old. Petland told me that the visit would be paid for and it wasn’t. They gave me a printout of all the vaccines they “claimed” they gave her and they are labeled “ complete”. The vet told me that she had not been given these vaccines and I started the first round today. This has been a horrible experience and more costly then I could ever imagine. AM I ABLE TO JOIN THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT DOES ANYONE KNOW? Thank you

      1. Ivon Saif says:

This same thing happened to us. We purchased a puppy from Petland with Giardia (what a nightmare) Can we start a class action lawsuit for Petland of Florida!

    3. Jenn Revell says:

      Hi I’m Jenn
A week ago Friday I bought a male Maltese puppy, the next day I took him to the vet, he was weak and couldn’t hold his head up. The vet that was on there list is the vet we took him to and our puppy said that Saturday morning till Monday this past week
Now it’s 6 days later and we are in our camper on vacation and our puppy is sick again and lifeless so we took him to a pet ER and getting him on IV again and having him checked out by a vet not affiliated with Petland, this will let me know what steps to take.
I bought this Maltese for 6K, first vet was free cause it’s who petland wants you to go through; today we put down $1600 to get him back on IV and check out his blood work and organ functions, he has dropped half a pound and is 9 weeks old and last Monday he weighed 2.1 pounds
      My email is jenniferstory186@gmail.com
If anyone knows of a great attorney, please contact me

      1. Ivon says:

        HI Jenn,

Have you been able to start a class action lawsuit against Petland?

    4. Amanda says:

We purchased our Alaskan Malamute in Pet and Kendall Sunday evening. Brought him to the specified vet the very next day Monday. He had Giardia parasite, also anemic. We brought him home with a bunch of meds. Wednesday night he had a turn for the worse. He became very lethargic began vomiting, stopped eating altogether. He could not keep his meds down because he would just throw it up a few minutes later. Made a same day appointment Thursday to the vet. They kept him all day with IV and some other meds because he also had a fever. He did not get any better. We brought him to a animal hospital Friday. He now also has another bacteria campylobactor that they detected. $4500 plus for the purchase. Vet visit $700. And now Animal hospital first day $1800 and he still there. I would also like info please on this lawsuit or starting one.

  9. Saday Rivera says:

Please contact me about this lawsuit. We purchased a puppy and she got Parvo and Giudira within 5 days of purchasing her. She’s been in the Vet hospital for 4 days and I’m critical condition. I called Solutions and sent the vet bills but I haven’t heard back from anyone.

    1. Marisol Garcia says:

Hello Saday. Did you ever hear back from anyone regarding this thread?

Trying to figure out if this is an active thread being monitored for an open class action suit.

  10. Stephanie Aiken says:

I purchased a sweet and beautiful Alaskan Malamute from Petland two weeks ago. Within two weeks, I have vet bills and an emergency room hospital bill. My puppy has been sick the whole two weeks I have had him. I am so distraught over the health and well being of my puppy. My 13-week old puppy had to be placed on IV Fluid Support last night. He has severe diarrhea and is bleeding from his anus. His anus has dried blood around it and it appears to be turned inside out; and is bright red. He has been shaking, wheezing, and coughing and is now on 3 different medications. I have never heard a puppy cough like this ever in my life. The sound of the cough is disturbing. It sounds like a grown adult with pneumonia and phlegm in the throat. He is lethargic and all he wants to do is sleep. He also had to be given a shot for nausea. His blood had to be drawn twice and tested for several things; so you can imagine the amount of discomfort my baby is in. He also had to get several x-rays done last night. One of the x-rays revealed a lower respiratory disease; waiting on test results which should be here in about 3 business days. I also have other animals in my home that could become sick as well. The vet states that she does not recommend that my youngest baby be around my older babies. He is not allowed to be outside and he is now confined to one area. He basically has to be quarantined. I decided to treat him at home because it would be $1100.00 per night to keep him at the hospital. I have racked up over ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS in hospital bills after paying THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to purchase my baby and plus another FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS for warranties and whatever else he needed. I am deeply saddened because of the pain my 13 week old baby is going through. He does not deserve this. Something needs to be done. I will come back and update you guys on his progress. By the way, his name is Jacob. Please pray for us during this time. I called Petland today and asked to speak to a manager; and the young lady told me that I needed to “call the support number on my paperwork” I got when I purchased my puppy. No concern at all and I never spoke to a manager.
