A former Petland employee has accused the pet vendor of selling sick puppies, putting other pets and humans at risk of infection.

The Petland class action lawsuit also claims that the company knowingly misrepresents the puppies it sells.

Plaintiffs Dawn Singleton and her daughter Katie say Petland knowingly sells puppies infected by a bacteria called Campylobacter, a bacteria that can commonly causes diarrhea, and in more severe cases, can cause arthritis or can be life-threatening.

Katie claims that she worked as a “puppy counselor” for Petland in December 2017, and as a regular part of her work, cleaned up sick puppies’ vomit and bloody excrement in the store. She says that later, her mother purchased a miniature Schnauzer puppy from Petland.

According to the Petland sick dogs class action lawsuit, mere days after her mother purchased the dog, Katie developed a 104.7 degree fever. She says that she was hospitalized and was diagnosed with a Campylobacter infection.

Allegedly, Petland knowingly sells puppies and kittens sourced from puppy and kitten mills, that they know are prone to illness and defects.

The Petland class action lawsuit says the pet vendor sells sham warranties and services along with the puppies that are “not worth the paper they are printed on.”

The Singletons argue that “at its core, Petland’s misrepresentations allow it to charge premium prices for puppies and kittens that customers believe are ‘certified’ to be healthy and backed up by warranties and services” when in fact, the vendor knows that the animals are not healthy in many cases.

The Petland class action lawsuit claims that more than 100 people were infected with the Campylobacter infection because of the sick puppies linked to Petland.

Supporting their claim, they note that the Center for Disease Control investigated a Campylobacter outbreak in 2018 that made 113 people ill in 17 states.

The agency determined that “contact with puppies sold through Petland stores were a likely source of this outbreak.” Allegedly, the CDC discovered that the outbreak took place between January 2016 and January 2018.

The Petland bacterial outbreak class action lawsuit also claims that Petland’s act of selling infected puppies led customers to not get what they paid for.

The Singletons note that Petland charges around $2,000 to $3,000 per pet.

Allegedly, the customers do not anticipate being “put at tremendous risk” by the pets and this risk is caused by Petland’s misrepresentations of the dogs and cats.

The Singletons are represented by David James Worley and James M. Evangelista of Evangelista Worley LLC and by Irwin Marc Ellerin.

The Petland Sick Puppies Class Action Lawsuit is Singleton, et al. v. Petland Mall of Georgia LLC, et al., Case No. 1:19-cv-01477, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

UPDATE: On June 28, 2019, PAWSitive asked a federal court to dismiss them from the Petland class action lawsuit.

I paid $4000 for a 4 month old French Bulldog, and as soon as I brought him home, he vomited everything he ate/drank. Took him for the vet check up that was covered by Petland, and they found faint positive of Parvo. They treated him, but he continued to vomit (now digested food) for 22 days straight 10 times a day. The clinic said there was nothing more they could do, so they referred me to North Georgia Veterinary Specialists. I was told by Petland Solutions that the treatments will be covered but will need to be paid as a reimbursement. I spent $1000 getting the puppy blood work, x-ray, radiology review, consultation, medication. Petland Solution continued to be ambiguous about the reimbursement referring to their 14 day warranty as well as congenital/hereditary warranty. Now I don’t even know if I’ll get the medical costs reimbursed. It’s been three weeks of caring for a sweet but very sick puppy and now I’m only three weeks away from giving birth to a newborn. It’s so upsetting that Petland can get away with scamming so many people into buying sick puppies that they document as ‘healthy’. The level of emotional, physical, and psychological stress is truly affecting me as well as the strenuous time invested in going to the vet and taking leave from work to accommodate these visits. I haven’t slept in three weeks because the puppy has vomiting/coughing fits all throughout the night, causing my husband and me to take turns caring for him.

I purchased a dog from Petland in Plantation Florida on August 10th. As soon as I got her home I noticed she was having bloody diarrhea and as it turns out she has giraurdia and another parasite. She is also a week behind on vaccinations. The customer care center is ignoring me of course. I want my money back. Is there anyway I can be added to the lawsuit?

      Hi Valerie,

Did you by any chance hear back from anyone about this? I am trying to figure out of this is an active case. If not I want to research the possibility of starting a new one for FL Petland.

      Thank you,
      Marisol Roque-Garcia

    Add me.
Bought two dogs . They both had guardia, only the lilac French bulldog stayed very ill. Went from pet solutions and all to the owner in petland plantation Florida and he didn’t want to refund or modify loan through lendingUSA and that was predatory lending as well. The only thing we were left with was to exchange the dog for a better French bulldog (a blue dawn) which was neutered and promised to be better — he’s now having severe bloody stools, droplets is blood throughout the house. Costly pet visits and medications and he’s still sick . Of course they won’t want to refund or take the dog back. What am I supposed to do ?!

I just bought 2 puppies in the last two weeks. One of them ended up in the hospital after one day of being home. Parvo!! The animal hospital says if we bring her home we run the risk that she is contagious for 6 weeks after she starts to shed parvo. This is heartbreaking for us. We keep getting the run around by the store and solutions about how they intend to remedy the wrong. I will say however so far they have paid her vet bill. But say only up to cost of puppy. But problem is. She put our other puppy at risk and now we can’t even have her at the house for 6 weeks.

I feel for everyone who is suckered into buying one of these poor puppies. I can only pray that laws become more strict so that these puppies can be more cared for!!

    1. AD says:

Wow, and according to pet lemon law there’s something that should be done, but I’m always getting the run around !

  8. Raedean Andrews says:

I would like to be involved.

I purchased a Siberian Husky back in 2016 for a little over $3000. That was the first time I ever even heard of Petland. She’s 3 1/2 now and I love her to to death. That first day I entered the store I noticed the “Help Wanted” sign in the their window. I’ve always had a love for animals and thought it would be something I would enjoy doing if I got to work there. So I decided to apply. Needless to say, I got the position working as a Kennel Technician in the back caring for the puppies. But what I came to realize soon after I was hired sickened me. Now I’ve never been into a pet store before that day I went and found Vega. Going in and looking around you see these puppies in the windows and best believe all their eyes are on you, scratching at their window, wanting you to pick them to go out into the cubicle to play for a few moments, because that few moments is all they get unless you decide to bring them home. What you don’t see walking down the line of puppies are the ones who are sick and shoved in even smaller cages isolated for days, sometimes weeks at a time, because there are hundreds of other puppies that can’t be put at risk. The employees have a chart we were expected to go by when it came to feeding time and believe me, that chart was pure neglect for those innocent souls. The employees and especially the owner does not care about the well being of the puppies brought in. If a small dog was hypoglycemic or sick or even needed a little extra time and care you would be reprimanded because as the owner said, “You can spend too much time with one animal because there are hundreds of other puppies who need to be tended to”. Basically meaning that poor dogs life isn’t worth their time because the other dogs will bring in money. When the dogs pass away, it is true that they are placed in the freezer in the back along with all the dead mice and rats. The puppies are brought in small vans with at least 8 or more cages that contain at least 3 dogs in each one. When they get there they always looked dehydrated and malnourished. We were only allowed to give a puppy a bath like once a month and had to mark it on a chart. The bigger dogs are place two to a not much bigger cage where they sleep on metal grates until someone saves them. The air filters and vents are covered in grime and you are reprimanded for even offering to clean it on your off time. (Of course, I am referring to myself.) As I worked there I felt like I needed to be there, so help them. I broke the rules and gave them extra food;LIKE WAY EXTRA, especially to the big guys. And spent time with the ones who weren’t doing to well. I gave baths when I wasn’t supposed to because they needed it and because it was another way to get them out of that cage. Petland is all about money and they don’t care what lie they have to tell to get it. Those dogs come in sick and not many of them even have a fighting chance. I was fired 3 months after being there, and after all the death and cruelty I’ve seen I would never work there or any other again. It’s heartbreaking and they need to be banned.

Now let me tell you about my experience back in February of this year, 2019. I was wanting to get another Siberian Husky because I love that breed. After walking in I immediately spotted a Red Siberian Husky so I asked for them to bring him out so I could introduce him to Vega. He was precious and I know how they are treated in there so I begged my fiancé to let us take him home even though he was totally against it because I had just had our newborn baby in December. I was told that he was a pure bred with Pedigree and able to register with AKC. He was $1800 after taxes and I had to pay half of that up front to bring him home. Petland uses this company IGW Solutions to finance these puppies. IGW SOLUTIONS, LLC a Limited Liability Corporation registered in Michigan and Florida with mailing/office addresses in Cleveland, Ohio engages in the business of financing puppy purchases for pet stores throughout different states. As IGW Solutions own website says, “Servicing pet stores across the country, IGW has a solid program focusing specifically on solutions for Pet Financing, Puppy Financing and Special Breed Financing. Take advantage of the IGW program for your Puppy Finance, and Pet Finance needs.” Almost all pet stores get their puppies from Puppy Mills: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/puppy_mills/
In our contract we sign with Petland it states we have 4 days to bring the pet to their Vet- All Creatures Animal Hospital and if they determine anything is wrong with the pet they pay the medical bills. Well, I brought Apollo, my new pal, up there and had to pay $52 for his fecal test, fecal smear, and rabies shot. The test came back that he had the intestinal parasite Giardia. So he was put on medicine for that and given doxycycline for his cough along with a dewormer. Giardia can in fact be transferred to humans and it cause agonizing pain to its host. My fiancé was very unlucky and became very sick because the parasite infected him and he had to get put on medication to remove it. He couldn’t eat, couldn’t move or get out of bed and missed work for an entire week. We took the dog back to the vet and it had not gone away and he had the other intestinal parasite as well- the one beginning with C. At the time my now 4 month old was 2 months, and I have a 4 year old who could have been infected by this parasite. And yes if not treated these parasite can kill you. So we had to return the dog to Petland and even though they they resold the dog, they claim I am still responsible for the other half of the money that was financed through IGW. Because we pay IGW and IGW pays them. So when I called IGW and explained that I returned the dog and got a letter stating that, they wanted Petland to send them their copy of it. I called Petland and George refused to send them the letter because if IGW doesn’t get paid then they don’t get paid. Something needs to be done because many other families who get these puppies are also being screwed over by this animal abusing corporation.

We would like to be involved in this. My puppy was very sick when we got him from Petland and their vet said he was fine. We took him to our vet and found he was not fine. He infected our other 2 dogs and my husband. It had taken us 3 almost 4 months to finally get all 3 of my dogs well. Petland sells sicks puppies, crap welness guarentee, do not stand behind their puppies, paperwork and over price their animals.

    1. Marisol Garcia says:
