Hill’s Pet Nutrition Recall

On Jan. 31, Hill’s Pet Nutrition announced a voluntary recall of several types of the company’s Science Diet canned dog food and Prescription Diet canned dog food, citing concerns that these pet food products may contain excessively high levels of vitamin D. On March 20, this recall was expanded to include even more varieties of the canned foods.

According to the recall notice, the high levels of vitamin D found in the canned dog food was due to an error with their supplier. As a result, Hill’s has committed to implementing additional product testing on their ingredients in order to prevent future errors.

Dangers of Vitamin D

Extremely high levels of vitamin D can lead to many health problems for dogs. These issues include loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased or excessive urination, vomiting, excessive drooling, and weight loss. In extreme cases of vitamin D exposure, some dogs may even develop kidney problems or kidney failure.

According to one pet owner, her dog began to experience adverse reactions to Hill’s Prescription Diet dog food within days of starting the diet. She told The Washington Post that her dog was given the food in an attempt to control the animal’s gastroenteritis.

Within a few days, she claims that her dog became lethargic, drooled constantly, threw up bile, and had diarrhea. These symptoms culminated in the animal suffering an unexplained heart attack.

Which Products are Included in the Recall?

The Hill’s Pet Nutrition voluntary recall affects multiple kinds of canned dog food. The recall does not affect dry dog food varieties, wet or dry cat food, or treats.

Consumers can check the FDA page regarding the Hill’s recall for a full list of the affected dog food products. Consumers with Hill’s Science Diet or Prescription Diet cans in their homes can check the SKU and lot numbers on the cans to determine whether their pet food is affected.

At least 675,000 cases of over 13 million cans are included in the dog food recall. 85 lot numbers and more than 40 varieties of canned food are affected. Approximately 80 percent of these products were meant for distribution in the United States, with the remaining 20 percent destined for shipment to other countries overseas.

My pet Boxer Dog Tanner died on August 4, 2019 after an extremely rough 5-6 months following him being placed on Hill’s Science Diet canned dog food by the vet. I have plenty of documentation, pictures, video, and neighbor testimony. I would like to sue the vet for not notifying us of the poisoned dog food and making an attempt to treat Tanner.
