Lenovo faces a class action lawsuit over an alleged defect.

A federal judge on Monday denied a request from Lenovo to dismiss a class action lawsuit filed against it over an allegedly defective two-in-one computer it sold called the Yoga.

Lenovo argued the class action offered little more than speculation that the company knew or should have known the hinged computers would break down before the end of the lifespan it boasted about to consumers. U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake disagreed. Based on the fact that Lenovo specifically advertised its Yoga line of devices would last for 25,000 open-close cycles – a number reportedly arrived at through durability testing – Blake said the class action’s allegations met the burden to proceed.

“In this case, the plaintiffs claim they have adequately put Lenovo on notice by pleading the who, what, where, when, and how of the alleged fraud,” Blake wrote in her ruling.

Specifically, the consumers who are suing say Lenovo knew their Yoga computers were built with defective hinges before it sold them, information it withheld from the public. The accusations in the class action lawsuit are being made, according to Blake, “not in a general and conclusory manner, but with at least a baseline level of particularity, alleging that Lenovo knew of the defective hinge system through four sources (durability testing, repair data, replacement data, and consumer reports).”

Both said they purchased models in Lenovo’s Yoga line of two-in-one computers, which were designed to be used alternately as laptops and tablets, depending on the positioning.

The dual-hinge system on the Yoga are key to the two-in-one functionality and Singh and Cox claim theirs broke long before the company advertised they might – but after the one-year warranty offered by Lenovo. Their class action lawsuit accuses Lenovo of violating numerous consumer fraud laws on the state level, in Maryland and Missouri, and federal violations including breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent concealment and unjust enrichment.

Lenovo’s Yoga 700- series models – 700, 710, 720 and 730 – are the main subject of the class action lawsuit.

Singh and Cox are seeking the court’s approval to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who, like them, purchased Lenovo Yoga two-in-one computers with allegedly defective hinges. They also want to represent two Subclasses, one each in Maryland and Missouri.

    Lenovo 730-13IKB Left side hinge broke, popped off cover. So far the screen has not cracked as I am trying to be very careful applying even pressure when opening and closing in the corner to hold hinge in place. But I assume it is a matter of time. Bought Dec 2018.

    Adult user here, never dropped or otherwise abused my Lenovo Yoga 7i, which is used daily but not my work laptop, so only opened and closed approx. once or twice a day. I was very disappointed to have had one hinge spring out of the frame as I started to close the lid today. Best Buy (where I purchased it just over a year ago) says it will have to send it out for repair because they don’t make mechanical repairs) guessed it would be a $200-300 repair and several weeks’ time)
    They suggested another repair shop who could do the work. That person also estimated a few $hundred. He also commented that “these machines are designed to break.” The laptop is otherwise very nice, but this low quality hardware is unacceptable.

    Hello brought Lenovo Yoga 7 series in Apr 2022 and the hinge breaks of in March 2023.Still wondering how could so many people have the same issue and Lenovo is helping its own consumers.

    Lenovo Flex 5 Ideapad also has a hinge issue and I am not alone on that front. I can neither open or close my laptop without bringing it apart.

    Purchased the Lenovo 7 in Feb 2021, In Feb 2023 the right hinge broke when closing the unit, cracking the screen. Touch screen capability is gone.

    I have a Lenovo Y50-70 purchased in the end of 2014, and so many people experienced hinge breakages on those, and Lenovo refused to do anything about it. It was even SPECIFICALLY the left hinge in virtually every case. They knew they had crewed up, and it happened for most of us not long after the warranty ended. I feel like we deserve some kind of justice too, my laptop has been unusable and sitting open in a box for years now, and I was forced to upgrade early – I normally have my laptops for far longer than I did before upgrading. They really should include any model that has had pervasive hinge problems!

    My computer sits safely on my desk. I open it once in the morning and close it once in the afternoon when I finish work. I work from home and run a small business from home so my laptop NEVER leaves my desk. I had a MacBook Pro that lasted for 12 years I kid you not. It would almost definitely still work if I would just go get the battery replaced. Yesterday after work I tried to close my screen and the bottom right hinge cracked through and completely separated from the screen. I will never purchase another Lenovo computer. This is my second one. I have no idea why I bought this because the first one was also a huge POS that barely lasted two years with minimal use.

    My Lenovo Yoga 730 right side hinge has caused the lower right side of my screen to crack twice now. I had it fixed the first time 1 year ago while it was under warranty. Now it has happened again a year later and it is no longer under warranty. I was quoted $700 to get a whole new screen and hinge repair. Being that this has happened twice, it is clearly a defective design. PLEASE HELP.
