Charter cable TV users are allegedly duped into paying increasingly high prices for service.

Charter customers have filed a class action lawsuit saying that the communications company misled its customers about the costs of its Spectrum cable television services.

The Charter class action lawsuit was filed by Randall Byrne, David Kleuskens, Jerry Henry, Jason Weber, and Susan Foster-Harper. These customers say that they are from Ohio and Kentucky, and all have Spectrum TV subscription with Charter.

Allegedly, the company deceptively increases the monthly rate, charges undisclosed fees, reduces the number of channels included in its packages, and makes it hard for customers to cancel their service subscriptions. The plaintiffs say that they were all offered a lower monthly rate that was then raised, contrary to what the company advertised.

The customers all present similar stories of how the company implanted a “bait and switch” scheme that led to them paying more than was advertised when they decided to purchase subscription.

In Henry’s case, he states that in May 2019, Charter promised him a flat promotional price of $150 per month for a cable package that included Spectrum TV Select. He says that the company promised him that the would be charged this rate for at leas ta year, but only five months later, increased fees. Henry says that by October 2019, the company had raised his monthly rate by increasing the Broadcast TV Surcharge by $1.51.

Then, in December 2019, the company alleged advertised a Spectrum TV “Seasonal Plan” that would allow him to pay less money per month to maintain service at his Ohio home while spending winter in Florida. The Charter bait and switch class action lawsuit asserts that, though the company advertised that he would be charged $9.99 per month for the plan, he was charged $23.40 per month after the company added an undisclosed $13.50 month “Seasonal Broadcast TV Surcharge” to his bill.

The Charter cable TV hidden fees class action lawsuit argues that Henry’s case is far from unique. Allegedly, the company makes a regular practice of advertising low rates but effectively charging customers much more by piling on undisclosed service fees.

The customers in the Charter cable class action lawsuit state that when customers have complained about this surcharge, they have been told a number of different, conflicting stories about the surcharge. They site one customer who says that the first time he called to ask about the Broadcast TV surcharge, Charter told him that it is a “tax” that Charter has no control over.

The second time he called, he says the was given a different explanation. Allegedly, he was told that Charter imposes the surcharge because the local government charged a fee to Charter to show some channels. The Charter representative allegedly told the customer that the surcharge was Charter’s way of passing off this government fee to consumers.

Charter cable consumers recently filed a class action challenging the company's pricing scheme.

However, the customers in the Charter cable class action lawsuit assert that this is not the case. They say that the surcharge is really just part of what Charter charges, but is concealed so that the company can make the monthly rate appear lower.

According to the customers, the company misrepresents this fee in various ways throughout its advertisements and actively instructs its staff members to lie about the nature of the surcharge to customers.

The customers then go on to take issue with the discounts offered by Charter, saying that they are not real discounts. Allegedly, Charter advertises discounts by offering a certain percentage off of the monthly rate, but effectively makes this discount meaningless, because they strategically raise the base monthly rate, which also raises the discounted rate. This is done because then the discounted rate is still the advertised percentage of the full rate, but is higher than the dollar amount initially advertised.

The customers say that, when they complain about this fake discount, the company claims that the discounts have remained the same though the rates have risen.

Finally, the customers say that they purchased the Charter cable TV services specifically because they believed that the services would include certain channels. However, the company allegedly makes a practice of removing channels from the package, and then telling customers that they must pay extra for channels that were once included in their cable packages.

I love how they try to bait you in…. By telling you we can grandfather you with your old price from Time Warner… They lower your price by $40… But it only lasts a couple of months… And they lie to you constantly…. every other representative has a different story to tell you why this and why that…. I got tired of paying for all my cable boxes so I bought roku’s and just downloaded their app…. That saved me $25 …. But then out of nowhere…. My price went back up as if I had cable boxes still…. They say you rent the cable boxes but I didn’t have any…. They got rid of epix and cinemax….. And still made us pay full price for channels that we’re gone…. They charged us extra money for Viacom channels….. Their HD channels are not free…. So I canceled my cable and just kept the internet…

Spectrum is crooked!! I pay almost 300 dollars and over the years prices has changed and discounts dismissed. It is almost like price gouging. Just ridiculous. I have phone cable and internet. Phone rate remains the same but internet pricing increased. I am a customer in North Carolina and would very much appreciate becoming apart of this lawsuit. Thanks for reaching out so glad someone stepped up to lead us to the pathway.

I thought I was the only person in that situation with them. I just turned off my service due to over charged. I ordered cable and internet for 87.85 a month but I end up paid 120 a month. When I asked why the answer was around couldn’t understand it.

  6. NW says:

I use Spectrum for only internet services & landline phone . Spectrum is overcharging me for internet fees

  7. Stacey Nelson says:

We got I when they had their 3 services for a flat rate of 109.00 per month it definitely didnt last 3 years at that cost. We called they said it was the government tax fees, before the end of 3 years we were laying 156.00 a month and they said it was the last tier of their promotion. They said when the 3 year promotion ended we would pay 190.00 per month and we couldn’t drop any service beforehand because the price would go up!!!

  8. Robert Oporto says:

Count me in pricing up and up with no explanation called several times and give me the run around lost channels and I live in el Paso tx.

    1. Tiffany Williams says:

It took me 3 months and multiple calls to cancel their cable service. Once all that was finally sorted out they still made me pay the surcharge/broadcasting fees even when I didn’t even have cable anymore. Told me they couldn’t credit me it or take it off once it was charged. So I paid those fees for 2 months even though I didn’t have cable anymore just internet. They also turned my cable off while I was still paying the bill.

  9. Harvey Crawford says:

You all that are paying for cable better get hip with Amazon stick or Cube and quit paying $100 of dollars for cable when you could be paying $25 dollars for iptv….I just have internet service with spectrum right now and the bill went up from $70 to $75.00 with no warning so yea their money hungry but their will be some competition soon so try and stick it out because if they don’t change their going to reap what they sowed.

  10. Stuart Tyll says:

Same thing happened to us we got a certain package that included all the movie channels then one day without any notification all of a sudden Epix and I believe it was Cinemax were no longer part of that plan and I had to pay extra for those channels. When I complained about it they were miraculously able to give me one of the channels back without charging me more but that only lasted a couple of months and that channel disappeared again along with some other channels that I didn’t really care about. I have to say Spectrum Comcast is by far the worst company I have ever had. They don’t care about keeping a customer. If you call up and say you’re going to leave they just said go ahead. It is true though the channels would disappear and the prices would just keep going up and up. Finally had to say go to blazes and went back to AT&T
