Sensio pressure cooker class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Judy Gibson-Roberts filed a class action lawsuit against Sensio Inc.
  • Why: Gibson-Roberts claims Sensio manufactured and sold pressure cookers with a dangerous defect that caused them to eject their super-heated contents while the devices were in use.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

Sensio manufactured and sold pressure cookers with a defect that could cause their lids to open and eject their scalding-hot contents, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Judy Gibson-Roberts claims the Sensio pressure cookers contained a “dangerously defective lid-locking assembly” that ultimately led the company to issue an August recall for nearly 860,000 of the products.

Gibson-Roberts argues the alleged lid defect caused consumers who used the Sensio pressure cookers to suffer second-and-third-degree burns from being hit with their super-heated contents.

“Given that Plaintiff and Class Members are unable to safely use the Recalled Pressure Cookers without risk of severe burns or injury, the Recalled Pressure Cookers are not fit for their particular purpose of safe cooking,” the Sensio class action states.

Gibson-Roberts wants to represent a nationwide class and South Carolina subclass of consumers who purchased any recalled Sensio pressure cooker from September 2015 to September 2020.

Consumer relied on Sensio’s ‘general reputation’ when making decision to purchase its pressure cooker, says class action

Gibson-Roberts claims she was never informed by anyone affiliated with Sensio about a recall or defect related to the pressure cooker prior to her purchase, but, instead, only learned about the defect from social media.

“In addition to relying on Sensio’s general reputation, which Sensio gained through marketing and promotion, Plaintiff chose the specific model because she believed it was a high quality pressure cooker,” the Sensio class action states.

Gibson-Roberts claims Sensio is guilty of negligence, unjust enrichment, fraud by omission or fraudulent concealment, and breach of express warranty, among other things, and of violating the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act

The plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, general, special, incidental, statutory, and consequential damages for herself and all class members.

In another complaint involving a pressure cooker, a lawsuit was filed against Cuisinart in April by a consumer claiming she suffered burn injuries after a Cuisinart pressure cooker she was using allegedly opened while pressurized
