Gree has initiated a recall of more than 1.5 million dehumidifier products, as they can overheat and catch fire.

The recall was published on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website Aug. 16. It applies to 42 models of dehumidifiers with brand names Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole and Seabreeze, manufactured between January 2011 and February 2014. About 1.56 million dehumidifiers are being recalled in total.

According to the notice, the dehumidifiers can overheat, smoke and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Gree has so far received reports of at least 23 fires, 688 incidents of overheating, and $168,000 in property damage with the recalled dehumidifiers.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Stop using and unplug recalled dehumidifiers

The recalled dehumidifiers were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards, Sam’s Club, Sears, Walmart and other stores nationwide starting in 2011 and through 2014 for between $110 and $400, the recall states. The recalled model numbers can be seen on the CPSC website.

Consumers should immediately stop using the dehumidifiers, unplug them and contact Gree to receive a refund, the company said.

In May, an insurance company sued Electrolux, claiming the appliance company is responsible for a fire caused by a recalled dehumidifier in a Pennsylvania church.
