Cuisinart lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Victoria Landrum has filed a lawsuit against Conair Corp., doing business as Cuisinart.
  • Why: She says her Cuisinart pressure cooker was defective and opened while pressurized, causing her to suffer severe burns.
  • Where: The Cuisinart lawsuit was filed in Connecticut.
  • What are my options: Macy’s carries many options when it comes to pressure cookers.

Conair Corp., doing business as Cuisinart, manufactures and sells defective pressure cookers that can cause significant risk of bodily harm and injury, according to a plaintiff who says she was severely burned due to the alleged defect.

Plaintiff Victoria Landrum alleges the pressure cooker has a lid that can be removed while the unit builds pressure, heat and steam.

“When the lid is removed under such circumstances, the pressure trapped within the unit causes the scalding hot contents to be forcibly ejected from the unit and into the surrounding area, including onto unsuspecting consumers, their families, and other bystanders,” according to the Cuisinart lawsuit.

Landrum says she was able to remove the pressure cooker’s lid while the unit retained pressure, and as a result she suffered catastrophic burn injuries to her chest in April 2020.

She claims this incident occurred because the purported pressure cooker safety features failed.

Plaintiff: Cuisinart pressure cooker manual falsely promises lid is double-locked, cannot be opened when pressurized

The Cuisinart lawsuit points to the appliance’s owner’s manual, which notes the pressure cooker is equipped with seven safety devices. Further, the manual reportedly claims that the pressure cooker lid is double-locked and cannot be opened until the built-up pressure is fully released.

Despite these representations, Landrum says, she was able to remove the lid with a normal amount of force while the pressure cooker was still pressurized, causing scalding hot liquid to be ejected onto her body.

Cuisinart knew or should have known about the pressure cooker defect but continued to tout the safety of their product and state that they cannot be opened while in use, Landrum claims.

However, the company “nevertheless put profit ahead of safety” and continued to sell the allegedly defective pressure cookers without warning consumers about the risks or issuing a recall, according to the lawsuit.

Due to the injuries Landrum suffered from the defective Cuisinart pressure cooker, she is faced with medical expenses, lost wages, physical pain, mental anguish and diminished enjoyment of life, the Cuisinart lawsuit asserts.

Landrum is not the first consumer to complain her Cuisinart pressure cooker exploded under normal use.
