Monsanto Roundup Cancer Lawsuit Overview:
- Who: The California Supreme Court upheld an $87 million award for a California couple who successfully argued Monsanto was responsible for their cancer diagnosis, while another consumer, Gene Whitlow Wyatt, has filed a complaint against the company.
- Why: Wyatt claims exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller caused him to develop B-cell follicular non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
- Where: The lawsuit was filed in Ohio federal court.
Monsanto still must pay a California couple $87 million after the California Supreme Court shot down its request to overturn a 2019 decision this week, and the complaints keep coming for the Bayer AG subsidiary.
Plaintiffs Alva and Alberta Pilliod were awarded the damages after a jury determined they successfully argued claims that Roundup weedkiller produced by Monsanto caused the couple to develop cancer, reports Law360.

Another lawsuit has been filed against Monsanto this week by a consumer claiming Roundup weedkiller is “defective, dangerous to human health, unfit and unsuitable to be marketed and sold in commerce.”
Plaintiff Gene Whitlow Wyatt further claims Monsanto failed to provide proper directions or warnings about the weedkiller, which contains glyphosate, a chemical that has been classified as a “probable carcinogen” by the World Health Organization.
Monsanto has been challenged with a number of complaints related to its Roundup weedkiller, with allegations coming everywhere from home gardeners to farmworkers.
The company has been ordered to pay hundreds of millions in compensation to plaintiffs claiming Roundup weedkiller caused their cancer, including a $289 million award to a California groundskeeper in 2018.
Wyatt, similarly to the Pilliod’s and others, is arguing his exposure to Roundup weedkiller caused him to develop B-cell follicular non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“Glyphosate and Roundup® in particular have long been associated with carcinogenicity and the development of numerous forms of cancer, including, but not limited to, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and soft tissue sarcoma,” states the lawsuit.
Wyatt claims Monsanto has been aware of the carcinogenic properties of Roundup weedkiller since as early as the 1980s, yet has failed to rectify the situation.
Further, Wyatt argues Monsanto actually continues to promote its Roundup weedkiller as harmless, even going so far as to claim it is safer than household table salt.
“Defendant made these statements with complete disregard and reckless indifference to the safety of Plaintiff and the general public,” states the complaint.
Wyatt claims Monsanto is, among other things, guilty of negligence and breach of express and implied warranties. He is demanding a jury trial and seeking compensatory, punitive, and other economic damages.
A wrongful death lawsuit was also filed against Monsanto earlier this month by a widow who claims the company was responsible for her late husband’s death in 2018, following a cancer battle she argues was caused by his exposure to Roundup.
Also this month, a Georgia couple claimed Roundup exposure caused the husband to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after he was exposed to glyphosate and surfactant POEA found in the weedkiller.
