Meijer class action alleges hydrogen peroxide falsely claims to shorten healing time

Meijer makes and markets a hydrogen peroxide product that purports to help healing when the product could actually slow the process, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Lashan Bridges filed the class action lawsuit against Meijer Inc. on Nov. 23 in a Michigan federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws. 

According to the lawsuit, Meijer manufactures and sells three percent hydrogen peroxide solution identified as an antiseptic promoted “For Treatment of Minor Cuts and Abrasions.”

However, the representation that the product will assist in treating and healing cuts is “false, misleading, and not authorized by any applicable body,” the lawsuit states.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and numerous medical studies, hydrogen peroxide does not treat minor cuts and abrasions because no evidence supports a connection between the number of bacteria and reduction in healing time of a clean wound, the plaintiff says.

Meijer class action claims plaintiff wouldn’t have paid listed price for product had he known representations were misleading

Marketing the product as being a tool “for treatment of minor cuts and abrasions” tells purchasers it will assist in the healing process and shorten healing time, yet this statement is false and misleading, the Meijer class action says.

Bridges says she wouldn’t have bought the hydrogen peroxide product if she knew the representations were misleading, or at least would have paid less for it.

She looks to represent a class of Illinois and Michigan consumers who bought the product plus a class of consumers who bought the product in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin.

Bridges is suing under state consumer laws and for fraud and unjust enrichment, and seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial. 

Meanwhile, Walmart has also been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging it makes and markets a hydrogen peroxide product that purports to help healing when the product could actually slow the process.
