KitchenAid recall rumors overview:
- Who: A rumor that KitchenAid recently recalled a stand mixer due to its accessories containing extreme levels of lead is untrue.
- Why: KitchenAid parent company Whirlpool Corp. says its aluminum alloy stand mixer accessories comply with federal safety regulations.
- Where: The KitchenAid stand mixer recall rumor reached consumers nationwide.
A recent viral Facebook post claiming KitchenAid issued a recall on a stand mixer due to its aluminum alloy accessories containing extreme amounts of lead is false.
Despite the claims, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says there are no active KitchenAid recalls, USA Today reports.
Meanwhile, Whirlpool Corp., the company that owns KitchenAid, reportedly says a third-party laboratory tests its aluminum alloy stand mixer accessories to ensure they comply with federal safety regulations.
While there are two KitchenAid products listed on Whirlpool’s product recall page, the company says neither are active but simply remain posted for consumers’ benefit, USA Today reports.
A message on KitchenAid’s website, meanwhile, says the lead levels in its products comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration standards.
The Facebook post that ignited the question about a possible KitchenAid recall has been shared more than 27,000 times while saying, in part, “KITCHEN AID RECALL – NOT A JOKE,” verifythis.com reports.
Blogger claims KitchenAid stand mixer accessories contain dangerous levels of lead
Tamara Rubin, who runs the Lead Safe Mama website, also contributed to the discourse by alleging she ran tests that found KitchenAid stand mixer accessories contained dangerous levels of lead.
Rubin demanded KitchenAid recall the products, while claiming one of the company’s dough hooks tested positive for a lead level of 2,434 parts per million (ppm), verifythis.com reports.
The testing has reportedly not been independently confirmed.
Fact check website Snopes also determined the KitchenAid recall is false, saying it has found “no evidence that Whirlpool Corporation … has issued any recalls of the components for the mixers due to lead or anything else at all.”
“From everything we could gather, no current recalls, recent recalls or quality initiatives existed for the product,” Snopes said.
Other kitchenware has also been in the news in recent months.
In November, All Clad agreed to pay $4 million to resolve claims the company sold cookware labeled as “dishwasher safe” that could actually be damaged by dishwashing.
