bamboo flooring in modern living roomA Cali Bamboo class action claims that flooring manufactured by the company fails to live up to its expected lifespan due to warping and other issues.

Cali Bamboo reportedly sells strand bamboo flooring, meaning that the whole boards are bamboo as opposed to a layer of bamboo on top of a different material.

The Cali Bamboo class action states that bamboo makes high quality flooring due to its structural properties which gives the flooring “a higher tensile strength than any traditional hardwood and even many alloys of steel.”

In their advertising and representations, Cali Bamboo reportedly assures the public and contractors that their products are durable and of high quality.

Statements on the product as well as representations on the Cali Bamboo website and social media allegedly affirm that the products are so strong, hard, and durable that they will last a lifetime. The company even claims to provide a 50 year guarantee for their products.

However, despite these representations, the recent Cali Bamboo class action alleges that the products are defective and prone to damage, cracking, warping, and other problems.

“Contrary to Defendant’s advertising and representations, the Product is subject to premature cracking, splitting, warping, and shrinking, all well before the warranted useful life, because of an inability to withstand foreseeable ambient moisture,” the Cali Bamboo flooring class action lawsuit argues.

Plaintiff William Klaehn and his wife say they purchased Cali Bamboo flooring at Lowe’s after seeing a display advertising the flooring as “’World’s Hardest Floors,’ ‘Pet-Friendly,’ scratch resistant, ‘High Heel Resistant,’ long-lasting, durable, and guaranteed to last 50 years.”

Due to these advertising statements, Klaehn reportedly purchased $2,000 of the Cali Bamboo Bordeaux Fossilized Flooring and $700 of the recommended Pergo Gold underlayment in April 2018.

However, in December 2018, Klaehn allegedly noticed that his floors were cracked and scratched. When Klaehn contacted Lowe’s, the retailer reportedly said that the glue used on the floor voided the warranty, despite Cali Bamboo recommending the glue.

“Cali Bamboo did offer to provide some t-moldings to assist with repairing some of the gaps, and to have an inspection at a cost of approximately $300 ($500 less a $200 credit towards the inspection) and, if the inspector determined the problem was due to a manufacturing defect, Defendant would provide a refund,” the Cali Bamboo class action lawsuit claims. Klaehn reportedly did not proceed with the inspection and continues to have defective floors.

Numerous other consumers have complained of similar issues online, and Klaehn argues that the problem is widespread. He also claims that he and other consumers would not have purchased the Cali Bamboo products or paid as much if they had known that they were not as durable and long-lasting as advertised.

Klaehn seeks to represent a Class of consumers who purchased Cali Bamboo solid bamboo flooring sold by Lowe’s since Jan. 1, 2012 or sold directly by Cali Bamboo between Jan. 1, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2016.

The Cali Bamboo class action seeks injunctive relief, disgorgement, restitution, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

Klaehn and the proposed Class are represented by Michael F. Ram and Marie N. Appel of Robins Kaplan LLP; Jeffery B. Cereghino of Cereghino Law Group; Charles J. LaDuca and Brendan Thompson of Cuneo Gilbert & LaDuca LLP; and Samuel J. Strauss of Turke Strauss LLP.

The Cali Bamboo Flooring Class Action Lawsuit is Klaehn v. Cali Bamboo LLC, et al., Case No. 3:19-cv-01498-LAB-KSC, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

There was a product related issue. I believe you’re product is hard plastic and the pad is too thick and with any movement at all the bottom grove breaks. I’ve installed floors for Home Depot (USIG) my rating is one of the best feel free to call them anytime they’ll tell you the same. For a floor that’s not supposed to gain moisture because it’s vinyl . Your flooring is worse then some of the cheapest on the market however I bet those people stand by there product.
This product was installed in a walkout Basement . My son has been in the flooring business for 23 years. ( FOLKS THIS WAS INSTALLED IN HIS OWN HOME) He works a lot of North Fork and The Hamptons on Long Island. If he had installed this anywhere he would have had to rip up the whole job. He has installed top end to low end products and this is the worst product he has ever come across. This was installed on a concrete floor and immediately we had a problem with cupping would it not staying together I will post pictures to show you. I called Lowe’s Lowes and told me to call the manufacturer who claims to have a 50 year warranty on this product. They sent an inspector and they of course blame it on the installer and the moisture in the concrete they had no intention of honoring their product they look for every excuse so they don’t have to pay anything. The product is beyond horrible it is made out of plastic it doesn’t give we have the padding on the back of the boards and didn’t make a difference it sat for eight weeks before it was installed in the same room and it started buckling coming up immediately. Overtime since October it has gotten worse. Anyone can come and inspect any job and and nitpick something so them sending an inspector and him saying that it’s like a moisture problem, how could it be a moisture problem when this is made out of plastic. Do not install this on a concrete floor you will have a problem guaranteed I spent a lot of money on this product and the company does not care one bit.
I would give it no stars. warning this is a problem. check out other reviews on different sites.

We bought our eucalyptus flooring in 2017. We acclimated it longer in the house we are living in. Started to put it down 3 months ago. It started separating and lifting. We now have a floor that looks like a fallen jenga game. We have called and talked Paul & TJ. Had a floor specialist come out and results said nothing was wrong with installation or product. Now only sell glue down not click lock (Ours was sold as click lock, we had to buy underlayment which says it is click lock. They told us they would give us 30% off anything. We paid over $5700.00 for flooring that was beautiful, now pinches our feet, we trip on pieces that are pulling up and when we were putting it down pieces where different sizes. They say we have a 50 year guarantee. How do you get any help without hiring an attorney. They say it’s a glue down, yet the website does not sell glue for it. I all so saw there is a class action lawsuit. I just think if a company gives you a 50 year gaurentee they should work with you not just throw 30% at you to buy more of their product, that failed.

    1. Sandra L Yglesias says:

We are in the same boat. I would join a lawsuit against them.

  9. Martha Anderson says:

I had the same issues as stated above. Mine started within 2 years. I have had them approximately 4 years. Their guarantee is worth nothing. I contacted customer service and explain the issues I was having. Took pictures and sent to them but got no where. I wrote letters and talk with customer service.I have got inch spaces between panels. It is getting to be a safety hazard. I am an elder person so I have to be very careful not to trip. I also got Lowe’s involved and they sent their installer to come and check it out. He said humidity and dampest caused it. Why in the world would a company sell a product where there was lots of humidity when it rains. That was not told to me when I purchased it. I was told the bamboo flooring I purchased was the best. It was sold as the real, best quality on the market. Something needs to done to make Cali and Lowes accountable. I can believe that Lowe’s sells a product that is such a poor quality. Also I did my research on the reviews of the products. Never saw remarks as stated above if so I would not wasted my money. I think Cali does a nice job hidden negative comments from their customers. I think Cali should be required to post all comments.
