The federal government ordered the destruction of all Real Water products Wednesday after several investigations and multiple class action and other lawsuits.

The Consumer Protection division of the US Department of Justice has reportedly obtained a permanent injunction against the makers of Real Water that requires further recall and eventual destruction of the alkaline water product linked to more than 50 cases of viral hepatitis. At least five cases of acute liver failure in children have been reported, along with the death of a woman in her sixties, have been linked to Real Water, according to 8 News Now, a Las Vegas CBS affiliate.

Real Water was sold nationwide and is marketed as “alkalized water infused with negative ions”; however, authorities began investigating the Arizona-based manufacturer after a series of hospitalizations were linked to the product in March of this year.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the toxic water sold under the Real Water brand and later recalled the product nationwide; however, authorities discovered that Real Water was still being sold online weeks later.

Real Water is also under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and the Southern Nevada Health District after multiple cases of viral hepatitis were linked to the product.

A slew of lawsuits, including a Real Water class action lawsuit, were filed in the wake of the investigations by consumers who claim they fell ill after drinking the beverage. Consumers say that they suffered “fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay or gray-colored bowel movements, joint pain, yellow eyes, jaundice, liver failure, hospitalization, and loss of appetite,” in at least one complaint.

In addition to destroying all Real Water, Justice Department officials have accused the manufacturer of failing to follow regulatory requirements for the production of the products in another lawsuit the company now faces.
