Donald Trump has banned some apps.

President Donald Trump has banned transactions with several China-based apps.

Trump signed an executive order Tuesday banning the transactions, according to a Reuters report.

The order is intended to mitigate the threat the Chinese apps pose to Americans, a senior administration official said.

In his order, Trump says the U.S. needed to take action against the apps’ developers as a matter of national security.

“Specifically, the pace and pervasiveness of the spread in the United States of certain connected mobile and desktop applications and other software developed or controlled by persons in the People’s Republic of China, to include Hong Kong and Macau (China), continue to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States,” the executive order states. “At this time, action must be taken to address the threat posed by these Chinese connected software applications.”

Within 45 days, the Commerce Department must determine which transactions will be subject to the ban, Reuters reported.

The executive order targets Alipay, CamScanner, QQ Wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate, WeChat Pay and WPS Office.

Trump’s order says the Chinese apps are able to “access and capture vast swaths of information from users” by accessing devices such as smartphones and tablets.

“This data collection threatens to provide the Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information — which would permit China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, and build dossiers of personal information,” the order states.

At a regular briefing Wednesday, foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said China would take steps to ensure companies’ legitimate rights are protected, Reuters reported.

She said the order was an abuse of the United States’ national power and was an unreasonable suppression of foreign companies.

Donald Trump has banned some apps.China’s Ministry of Commerce said in a statement Wednesday the ban hinders fair competition and harms Chinese companies’ interests and customers, according to Reuters. The statement pointed out U.S. and other customers had “widely welcomed” the apps during the coronavirus pandemic as a way of making contactless payments.

However, the ultimate fate of the executive order remains unclear, as it is set to take effect in 45 days, after the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, The Washington Post reported.

Trump’s latest order is similar to one signed in 2020 to block transactions between the U.S. and TikTok.

The president’s order banning TikTok said there was “credible evidence” the app posed a threat to national security because TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is based in China.

TikTok, in turn, sued the U.S. government, accusing Trump of issuing the order for political reasons.

TikTok and ByteDance also filed a second lawsuit against Trump’s administration days before the ban was to go into effect, arguing the ban exceeded the president’s authority and violated the Constitution.

In early December, a federal judge blocked Trump’s order, saying the president did, indeed exceed his authority, according to NPR.
