Monster HDMI CableA state court judge granted final approval to a class action settlement deal that will benefit around 1.4 million customers who purchased Monster’s HDMI cables.

The settlement was given preliminary approval in March 2018 but only recently was granted the final “okay” by the court.

Under the Monster HDMI settlement, consumers were able to choose between store credit with Best Buy or a cash payment.

Consumers who provided proof of purchase will be able to collect between $10 and $18 in cash payments for their HDMI cables that provided more than 10.2 gigabits per second of high definition signal.

If consumers exchange their cable for a different cord, they may be able to collect between $14 and $35.

Without proof of purchase, consumers are expected to collect between $20 and $30 in credit to be used on the Monster website.

The Monster HDMI settlement benefits consumers who purchased a Monster HDMI cable with a bandwidth exceeding 10.2 gigabits per second between Aug. 25, 2011 and March 6, 2018.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement passed on Dec. 27, 2018.

The settlement resolves class action claims from plaintiffs Amy Joseph and Robert O’Brien who claimed that the packaging for Monster’s HDMI cable was misleading.

The Monster class action lawsuit alleged that the marketing for the product made customers think that they needed to spend more money to get the most powerful cable available for high definition televisions.

Joseph and O’Brien claimed that a cable only needs 10.2 gigabits per second in bandwidth to transmit an HD signal, meaning that the more expensive product was not actually necessary. The plaintiffs also brought claims against Best Buy where the product was sold.

In addition to resolving the claims and providing monetary compensation, the Monster HDMI settlement also requires Monster to make changes to their packaging.

These changes will include different labeling language and a “Need For Speed” chart aimed at explaining the different speeds provided by cables. However, this chart will not include any statements about which cables are needed for specific functions.

By giving the settlement final approval, Cook County Associate Judge Franklin Valderrama has approved $375,000 in attorneys’ fees for the lawyers representing the plaintiffs and Class Members.

This amount will be paid separately from the money set aside to benefit claimants in the settlement.

The court also approved $3,000 in service awards to be given to the plaintiffs for the time and effort spent in litigation.

The settlement Class is represented by Thomas Zimmerman Jr. and Sharon Harris of Zimmerman Law Offices and Robert Clifford and Shannon McNulty of Clifford Law Offices.

The Monster HDMI Cable Class Action Lawsuit is Joseph, et al. v. Monster Inc., et al., Case No. 15-CH-13991, in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.

I agree with the previous posters. This is a total scam, crap settlement! I don’t believe any of the scattering of cables offered on the settlement website cost Monster more than the “shipping” cost for 1 cable and I don’t believe that $11.99 is a reasonable shipping cost for a cable.

Also notice how the only single cable that retails for about $30 has been “sold out” for weeks? https://monster-redemption.myshopify.com/

My first thought was that the “shipping” cost is the actual cost of the cable. (laugh)

  2. jerry samders says:

What a SCAM! You can only use settlement code on a site with only 7 products. But the real scam is that you have to pay a ridiculous fee of $11.99 shipping…..plus tax even if your total is way under your settlement amount. In other words, my settlement code is for $30. The cable I picked out was $14.99……they only take off the $14.99 with the code…..and want to charge me the extra $11.99 shipping plus the tax. I seriously believe that this SCAM deserves a CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT in itself. This company is trying to profit on the shipping to make up for the settlement costs. This settlement agreement was NOT a way for them to profit!!!!

    1. David says:

I agree that this is ridiculous. I will not be using the credit that they emailed me. I think everyone should submit a complaint.

      1. Mike says:

That’s why they did it this way in sure. They figure most won’t use it so that money stays in their pockets. Even if someone does use the credit they make enough on over charging for shipping to cover their cost manufacturing the cable.

      2. Josh says:

Agree 100%. I emailed the claims administrator and told them I definitely would have objected if I had known this was how it would be remedied. I don’t know how a judge approved this plan. I’m hoping it turns out the judge just wasn’t aware that they planned to charge a separate shipping charge (which they will profit off of) in order for their victims to use the code, and maybe he’ll require them to change that at some point.

  3. SCAN says:

TOTAL SCAM. THERE GOING TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF ANY ONE WHO PAYS FOR A NEW CABLE AND SHIPPING! GUESS MY COUPON WILL BE TRASHED WERE THEY WANT IT TO GO.

    1. D says:

Right why would I pay $10 after I received on a valid claim…what a joke they want to get back money from the settlement SMH!!

  4. Harvey says:

$12 shipping. What a monster joke.

    1. S says:

What a joke the cables are still overpriced and why is the shipping that expensive. The lawyers & monster cable screwed everyone with this settlement

  5. ANGRY says:

Never ever again will I buy a Monster cable and I advise everyone do the same. CROOKS!

  6. John Tokalenko says:

TOTAL scam! Redemption code cannot be applied to the rip-off “economy” shipping of $11.99.

This is what passes for “justice” in America’s court system.

  7. JasonT says:

$30 off a very limited selection and then pay $11.99 shipping for the “free” cable. You can buy a non-Monster branded equivalent cable for the cost of shipping on Amazon.

    1. John Tokalenko says:

The alleged benefit was to be a “credit on Monsterproducts.com.” Funny thing, if you go there, you find a much wider selection of products, and, all of the cables there link you to amazon to buy them!

  8. Jennifer L says:

got an email in my junk today for $30 credit but the site to redeem it on isn’t working, have till June 30th to use it so hopefully its just that everyone’s trying to redeem them or they fix it.

    1. Jc says:

Same here, $30 but anything past the initial site load is an error. It was so long ago, I had to Google to see if it was some sort of phishing scam. Lol.

      1. Jennifer L says:

same I wasn’t sure if it was real at first, so I looked it up. It is but many will think its fake due to the site not working. I did send an email to them to let them know the site is giving that error, so hopefully they get it fixed.

      2. Jenn R. says:

Same. Thought it was a scam at first too since I had forgotten about it as well. Went on the website and I had the same problem. No store or shop to look in or was given an error message depending on what option from the menu I tried. Wonder what took them so long lol hopefully they will fix it soon

    2. Barbara Lawson Svaricek says:

Me to. This seems like a scam in itself. These codes are one time use, so if you don’t use the whole amount you can’t come back and redeem the remainder towards another purchase AND they expire in 6 months yet there’s NOTHING on the website to even purchase!!

      1. Barbara Lawson Svaricek says:

Also, I did not encounter any errors just no products listed at all. I clicked “shop” and another link for products but they did nothing.

    3. pete says:

same here, the website wont load

  9. Js says:

    Received $49 in ca today

  10. Freida says:

On the HDMI website post comment someone said they received 200 hundred and some odd dollars today
