Dollar General prices class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Lori Hartline filed a class action lawsuit against Dollar General Corporation and Dolgencorp LLC doing business as Dollar General.
  • Why: Hartline claims Dollar General regularly charges more than the advertised shelf price for products sold at its grocery store locations.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Oklahoma federal court.

Dollar General regularly charges customers a higher price for various items at the cash register than what their advertised price is on the shelf, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Lori Hartline claims she has noticed a discrepancy in what she was charged and paid at checkout versus the advertised shelf-price for merchandise she purchased at a Dollar General in Porum, Oklahoma.

Hartline argues she has filed three complaints with the Oklahoma attorney general this year over Dollar General allegedly charging her more at checkout for merchandise than what the advertised shelf-price was.

“It is Defendant’s policy and practice to charge a higher price at the register for merchandise than the price advertised on the unit price labels for the same merchandise on the shelves in Defendant’s Oklahoma stores,” the Dollar General class action states.

Hartline wants to represent a class of consumers who, within the last three years, have paid more for merchandise than the advertised price labeled on the shelf at a Dollar General store located in Oklahoma.

Complaints also filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio, New York, class action says

Hartline cites complaints that have been filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio and New York by consumers claiming the store regularly charged customers higher prices at the register than the price of merchandise advertised on the shelves.

“Defendant used the same procedures that they employed in charging a higher price than advertised to Plaintiffs when selling the same and/or similar merchandise to numerous other consumers in its Oklahoma stores,” the Dollar General class action states.

Hartline claims Dollar General is in violation of the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act. She is demanding a jury trial and requesting injunctive and declaratory relief along with an award of actual, treble, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Dollar General earlier this year by a consumer arguing the company failed to make its website fully accessible to and independently usable by individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

The plaintiff is represented by William B. Federman and Jessica A. Wilkes of Federman & Sherwood, and Brian D. Flick and Marc E. Dann of DannLaw.

The Dollar General prices class action lawsuit is Hartline v. Dollar General Crop., et al., Case No. 6:23-cv-00319, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

I am from upper illinois. I never used to pay attention but since things became tighter for my family recently I have realized that I anytime I try to buy sale or use the app coupons to shop many times it i dont get the discount or not the right ones especially if the app coupons are used. You can’t see what’s gone thru till your about to pay and the workers tend to be pretty rude when you question it especially if you want them to help explain or refund things. And this has happened to me in multiple dollar generals in my area. I have stopped going to the ones around me unless absolute necessary and don’t shop the coupons it’s just too much of hassel to deal with most times

Knox County, Ohio stores (1 in Fredericktown and 3 in Mount Vernon I visit regularly) are also guilty of doing this! I even took pictures time stamped to prove the discrepancy to the cashier’s! I wrote my local Attorney General David Yost and shortly after, I recieved an “apology” letter from Dollar General and a $5 gift card ‘for the trouble’. I dont know which was more insulting, the bait and switch they pull with the price labels or their offering $5 credit when I’m CERTAIN I have been overcharged HUNDREDS of dollars over the last 4 years. Please add me to this!

Yes and I’m so glad someone is finally talking about it! My family is always like ” it’s 10 cents big deal” and my response is always now times that 10 cents by how many customers per day and then times that per store. (Which they have one in damn near every small town and several in the cities!) The most recent complaint I had about the price not being right had to do with a coupon. On the shelf I bought the exact product that had the sign for the coupon. The manager told me that just because the sign is on that product doesn’t mean it’s for that product! I read the tag and the digital coupon on my phone and what I was going to buy fit the criteria, but they wouldn’t give it to me for the coupon price so I told them they could keep it! The store in my town literally doesn’t give you the survey ticket unless you go through the self check out! Pay close attention to the Sat $5 coupon also. If you are around $25 and not extremely over that. There will be a store discount or store coupon on almost every item so that your total will come out to be just under $25. I have lots of stories, but not just dollar general. Almost every store has gone to this over complicated receipt that makes it hard to follow what they are really charging you so that in the moment you’ll be too flustered to complain!

This has happened at my dollar general constantly. Please add me

  7. Debbie Bain says:

They charge more in Mississippi at the register than what’s showing on the shelf.

  8. Teresa Curtis says:

This is one of my major issues with this store in my area
If I see when I am checking out it I get it changed right then
If caught after I leave I have gone back and got it corrected
Most of the time the person working has no clue how to correct the issue and has to get a manager to do it
I really is a huge issue and with todays technology this should not happen anywhere as much as it does

  9. Taronta Mack says:

Yes I have been charged more at the counter then on the shelf. The receipts are so complicated there’s no way you can complain.
