Dollar General prices class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Lori Hartline filed a class action lawsuit against Dollar General Corporation and Dolgencorp LLC doing business as Dollar General.
  • Why: Hartline claims Dollar General regularly charges more than the advertised shelf life for products sold at its grocery store locations.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Oklahoma federal court.

Dollar General regularly charges customers a higher price for various items at the cash register than what their advertised price is on the shelf, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Lori Hartline claims she has noticed a discrepancy in what she was charged and paid at checkout versus the advertised shelf-price for merchandise she purchased at a Dollar General in Porum, Oklahoma.

Hartline argues she has filed three complaints with the Oklahoma attorney general this year over Dollar General allegedly charging her more at checkout for merchandise than what the advertised shelf-price was.

“It is Defendant’s policy and practice to charge a higher price at the register for merchandise than the price advertised on the unit price labels for the same merchandise on the shelves in Defendant’s Oklahoma stores,” the Dollar General class action states.

Hartline wants to represent a class of consumers who, within the last three years, have paid more for merchandise than the advertised price labeled on the shelf at a Dollar General store located in Oklahoma.

Complaints also filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio, New York, class action says

Hartline cites complaints that have been filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio and New York by consumers claiming the store regularly charged customers higher prices at the register than the price of merchandise advertised on the shelves.

“Defendant used the same procedures that they employed in charging a higher price than advertised to Plaintiffs when selling the same and/or similar merchandise to numerous other consumers in its Oklahoma stores,” the Dollar General class action states.

Hartline claims Dollar General is in violation of the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act. She is demanding a jury trial and requesting injunctive and declaratory relief along with an award of actual, treble, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Dollar General earlier this year by a consumer arguing the company failed to make its website fully accessible to and independently usable by individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

I Live in Clintwood, Virginia and am a 47 year old mom of 2 kids who has griped about the difference in shelf/tag/”sale price” of items versus price charged at the register/printed on receipts. Our small town opened a “new” Dollar General store within the past year and i, after noticing on my receipt while going over it one evening after a large purchase, there were several items that i was charged more for than what i had noticed the shelf price tag said.. i noted the discrepancies on my receipt but didn’t bring it to the store’s attention at that point because a couple of the ladies that usually work at our local store are hateful and not friendly or helpful on a good day. I decided to take it upon myself to make a mental note of the shelf price/sale price tags, etc. of any item i am purchasing from there since then and it never fails that a few of the items are always a bit higher on the receipt than what is advertised in store. I try to pay attention as the items are being scanned, however if i have a large amount of items and two kids to watch over, i don’t always catch the price differences until i get a minute to look over my receipt at home. On the occasion when i have noticed a sale advertised on shelf tags or a price discrepancy while checking out, i do voice the difference and the cashier usually yells for the young male manager on duty, who i must say is always polite about it, and he has always adjusted the price accordingly. The thing is, the price differences are usually several cents to the benefit of Dollar General and not the customer, and unless a consumer is like me and very observant of the shelf price tags vs actual price paid on their receipt or is unaware to even check for a discrepancy, every single customer is getting ripped off at some point shopping there and it is unbeknownst to them. Since the price differences are not extremely obvious, i feel like Dollar General is purposefully deceiving its customers with false advertising in the most subtle of ways to get/stay “in the money”. I just wonder exactly how long this has been going on and just how much has been stolen off of its customers..I guarantee you if you shop at any of the Dollar General stores anywhere across the USA, and you make a large purchase and can take either mental/physical notes of item shelf prices vs the price paid on your receipt, there will be some items that a person was charged slightly more for every single time. That, even if only several cents more on 2-4 items for almost all of the customers, everyday, would have to equal major profit for Dollar General at the expense of its customers wallets. Feel free to contact me/include me in this lawsuit. Thanks

I AM OVER DOLLAR GENERAL! Out of 5 pick up orders, 2 have been filled. The one I picked up today didn’t have all of my order. They changed the price on 3 items and because it was half filled, I didn’t get my expected discount. Money is too tight for this crap. Every penny counts!

  4. Debra S Williams says:

Every time you shop there. They go look and take tag and say oh no it’s right.

  5. Shannon Rosier says:

Every Dollar General I have spent my hard earned money at, has charged more for items at register than what the shelf price says. When I have ask about it, they say, oh that’s digital coupon prices. However, I know the difference. There is also suppose to be items for a penny but the stores always get those ktems.

    1. Sabrina says:

      1. Denise Stone says:

NY stores or many of them are not allowed penny items at least any of the 3 stores within a 3-6-10 miles radius of me. So the Penny deal is a joke around here.
