Dollar General prices class action lawsuit overview: 

  • Who: Lori Hartline filed a class action lawsuit against Dollar General Corporation and Dolgencorp LLC doing business as Dollar General. 
  • Why: Hartline claims Dollar General regularly charges more than the advertised shelf price for products sold at its grocery store locations. 
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Oklahoma federal court. 

Dollar General regularly charges customers a higher price for various items at the cash register than what their advertised price is on the shelf, a new class action lawsuit alleges. 

Plaintiff Lori Hartline claims she has noticed a discrepancy in what she was charged and paid at checkout versus the advertised shelf-price for merchandise she purchased at a Dollar General in Porum, Oklahoma.

Hartline argues she has filed three complaints with the Oklahoma attorney general this year over Dollar General allegedly charging her more at checkout for merchandise than what the advertised shelf-price was. 

“It is Defendant’s policy and practice to charge a higher price at the register for merchandise than the price advertised on the unit price labels for the same merchandise on the shelves in Defendant’s Oklahoma stores,” the Dollar General class action states. 

Hartline wants to represent a class of consumers who, within the last three years, have paid more for merchandise than the advertised price labeled on the shelf at a Dollar General store located in Oklahoma.

Complaints also filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio, New York, class action says

Hartline cites complaints that have been filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio and New York by consumers claiming the store regularly charged customers higher prices at the register than the price of merchandise advertised on the shelves. 

“Defendant used the same procedures that they employed in charging a higher price than advertised to Plaintiffs when selling the same and/or similar merchandise to numerous other consumers in its Oklahoma stores,” the Dollar General class action states. 

Hartline claims Dollar General is in violation of the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act. She is demanding a jury trial and requesting injunctive and declaratory relief along with an award of actual, treble, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members. 

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Dollar General earlier this year by a consumer arguing the company failed to make its website fully accessible to and independently usable by individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

    Add me. Every time I buy something from dollar general I go by the price on the shelves. But when I get to the register it’s a different price, and more than what’s on the shelves. I tell them what the price say on the shelves. They just ignore me. So please add me

    I have MANY pics and receipts saved to show the price difference when I contacted my Attorney General office multiple times. I filed 3 complaints in total and the Attorney General office notified me multiple times that Family Dollar and Dollar General were not responding to their lawyers so they would pursue further….I have everything saved because I seriously thought about contacting my local news station….

    Same thing here in CT and I contacted the Attorney General 3 times and FINALLY after 1 1/2 years the sign is posted on the register that if a “consumer commodity rings in at the wrong price the customer is entitled to it free, up to $20”! I have many emails and voicemails from the Attorney General office stating their lawyers are pursuing this matter and FINALLY, about a month ago, something was done….can’t say the prices are fixed now to ring in correctly but at least now I have satisfaction something was at least done about it (Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree all operated together in CT)….

    The same thing happens here in Tennessee. Every weekend when I buy my husband’s Monster drinks I have to argue with the employee to get them at the shelf price.

    Wow… same thing happening here in IOWA, all over iowa to be quite Frank. The excuse I’ve been given by DG employees is that the stores are due in for a full store reset but there has been 2 stores I’ve been to that havent been reset in over 6 years! A lot can happen in 6 years, of which a purchase I made this spring cost me $13 when the shelf price was labeled $6… $7 difference, more than double what the shelf stated!!! Crazy to believe the employees do not notice such differences or havent been alerted in the past. The deception!

      I was gonna say the same thing! And beware if you go to one of those stores with a person with an attitude behind the counter, they get mad at you for telling them what the shelf price is VS what it rang up as! Like you shouldn’t be charging extra when the price tag says otherwise, then we wouldn’t have to even be having this conversation. I’ve even taken pictures of the tag in store before going to checkout just to make sure the price is right.

    San Antonio Texas stores do it as well.. especially the one in bexar county of mogford Rd . In San Antonio TX….sugar is charge more n milk when you check out.. sugars$295 register is $395.. Milk is $395. Register price $500…
