Dollar General prices class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Lori Hartline filed a class action lawsuit against Dollar General Corporation and Dolgencorp LLC doing business as Dollar General.
  • Why: Hartline claims Dollar General regularly charges more than the advertised shelf price for products sold at its grocery store locations.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Oklahoma federal court.

Dollar General regularly charges customers a higher price for various items at the cash register than what their advertised price is on the shelf, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Lori Hartline claims she has noticed a discrepancy in what she was charged and paid at checkout versus the advertised shelf-price for merchandise she purchased at a Dollar General in Porum, Oklahoma.

Hartline argues she has filed three complaints with the Oklahoma attorney general this year over Dollar General allegedly charging her more at checkout for merchandise than what the advertised shelf-price was.

“It is Defendant’s policy and practice to charge a higher price at the register for merchandise than the price advertised on the unit price labels for the same merchandise on the shelves in Defendant’s Oklahoma stores,” the Dollar General class action states.

Hartline wants to represent a class of consumers who, within the last three years, have paid more for merchandise than the advertised price labeled on the shelf at a Dollar General store located in Oklahoma.

Complaints also filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio, New York, class action says

Hartline cites complaints that have been filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio and New York by consumers claiming the store regularly charged customers higher prices at the register than the price of merchandise advertised on the shelves.

“Defendant used the same procedures that they employed in charging a higher price than advertised to Plaintiffs when selling the same and/or similar merchandise to numerous other consumers in its Oklahoma stores,” the Dollar General class action states.

Hartline claims Dollar General is in violation of the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act. She is demanding a jury trial and requesting injunctive and declaratory relief along with an award of actual, treble, statutory and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Dollar General earlier this year by a consumer arguing the company failed to make its website fully accessible to and independently usable by individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

I was in the Aberdeen MD store and it happened this week. I actually made them make the corrections and their computer was automatically up charging my items . The manager had to manually go in and give me my correct change. It’s sad.

  2. Erica says:

  3. Diamond Miller says:

It happened a lot at the Dollar General in Lakefield, MN it actually happened every time I would go there so I stopped going there. They claimed they didn’t have enough staff to change the prices to the correct amount. This mainly happened to me on sales they would have going on. On their app or in their weekly ad it would be one price then when they ring it up at the register it would be a totally different amount usually always a higher amount. I would go there expecting to spend what the ad prices were only to get charged a higher amount then I would have to go back in if I didn’t catch it at the register and get the money put back on my EBT card if I caught it at the register they would take so long to verify the amount I told them it should be ringing up then people waiting in line behind me would be mad for me trying to pay what it should have rang up in the first place. It was such a waste of time and gas and making people mad I decided I would just go to the over priced grocery store if I needed anything right away and if not I would travel to a larger town with more options for grocery stores with way better prices and stock up on food paying a lot less money for it. It also happened at the Luverne, MN Dollar General as well the one or two times I tried going there so I’ve just completely stopped going to Dollar General stores at all since I’m almost positive they are doing this on purpose just to scam people.

They always trying to over charge when you get to the register. Upset me very much so. Merrick Smith of Illinois

    1. Shirley Bradley says:

I have often been charged differently at the counter and when I point it out, I’m told that the posted prices were from an old sale and that it hasn’t been taken down yet. Only once did the cashier honor the price posted because they hadn’t taken down the old prices.

  8. Terrie Edwards says:

Dollar General is a joke. I worked at 1 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. It was the worst. I was wrongfully terminated over a social media post. The store manager is addicted to red bulls, vicodin and God only knows what else. She has had many complaints on her, and somehow is still a manager, but can’t seem to find an assistant store manager. She doesn’t take the time to train anyone in the store, she cuts corners on a lot of things she’s been told not to do, she doesn’t FIFO, she’s rude, and she bad mouths everyone to everyone. I bet if this DG were to ever end up on an episode of ‘Undercover Boss’ something might get done. The store is a mess and it’s dirty and nasty.

  9. Shandra R. says:

Can you please add me? Because some of prices of Always maxi pads are more than $ 8.50 ! In March 2023 to September 2023 , I was very upset about almost $450 a month on personal stuff! That’s a damn shame!

  10. Kylie says:

It is happening here in Illinois as well. It’s absolutely ridiculous. An the dollar general in my town the store manager is a complete b**** towards ALL customers it don’t even matter what they say, do, or ask for that matter. She shouldn’t even be working in retail legal alone a store Manger. There’s been so many complaints about the pricing issues along with the staff being ignorant towards customers. Dollar general needs to do better, and actually listen to their buyers instead of the lying staff they hiring 95% of the time…
