Credit unions and banks have been in hot water over for the past several years, for allegedly unfairly charging consumers high overdraft fees or improperly indexing transactions that would allow the financial institutions to maximize these fees.

Typically consumers join credit unions due to having the reputation of treating customers better than banks. However, the recent economic recession had caused customers to be careful not overdraw their accounts and be conservative on their spending habits.

Star One Credit Union is one of the credit unions that have been accused of using various tactics to maximize overdraft fees. Several years ago, Star One Credit Union had been one of several credit unions in California hit with overdraft fees lawsuits in 2012.

Consumers complained that they were unfairly charged Star One Credit Union overdraft fees, claiming that their transactions were indexed from high to low rather than in chronological order. These practices were reportedly established in the early 2000s, and had allegedly subjugated numerous customers to unfair Star One Credit Union overdraft fees.

Attorneys involved in the overdraft lawsuits accused Star One Credit Union and other credit unions of “the systematic manipulation and re-ordering of electronic debit transactions from the highest dollar amount to the lowest dollar amount…to maximize the amount of overdraft fees collected.”

Overview of Star One Credit Union Overdraft Fees

Star One Credit Union is one of Silicon Valley’s largest credit unions, offering service to over 98,000 members across the globe. Star One Credit Union offers consumers high interest on saving accounts, lower interest rates on loans or mortgages and reasonable fees.

Star One Credit Union overdraft fees typically average at $15 per overdraft, with the credit union offering consumers different options to pay the fees.

According to the Star One Credit Union website, customers who have insufficient funds in their primary checking account, multiples of $100 will be transferred from the savings account without any charge.

The credit union also provides customers the choice of opting in for a courtesy pay option, if the customer does not sign up for the savings account option.

Under this option, the credit union will automatically provide customers up to $2,000 for a transaction if there are insufficient funds in the account. However, Star One Credit Union overdraft fees are $15 per transaction.

Even with Star One Credit Union’s different options, customers are still worried over the overdraft practices of the credit union.
