Class action claims Selsun Blue causes scalp irritation and hair loss

Toxic chemicals in the anti-dandruff shampoo Selsun Blue can actually aggravate scalp problems and even lead to hair loss, a class action lawsuit claims.

Lead plaintiff Emily Lewis accuses the shampoo maker, Sanofi-Aventis, of failing to inform consumers about toxic ingredients like selenium sulfide used in the product.

Lewis says she purchased Selsun Blue in 2020 based on marketing that it could help eliminate her dandruff and dry scalp. However, after using the product twice a week as directed, she claims her hair became brittle and began falling out. She also did not see an improvement in her dandruff.

In addition to selenium sulfide, the complaint contends that Selsun Blue products contain a preservative called DMDM Hydantoin. The plaintiff says that this ingredient can cause irritation and even release formaldehyde, which is another toxic chemical.

Further, Sanofi fails to disclose scalp irritation and hair loss as a potential side effect of using Selson Blue products, alleges the lawsuit. Lewis says that she and other consumers wouldn’t have purchased the product if they knew about the toxic ingredients.  Indeed, the complaint points to reviews on the online retailer Amazon complaining about the false advertising of Selsun Blue.

The class action lawsuit seeks to represent a nationwide class of consumers who purchased and used Selsun Blue products within the past three years, along with a subclass of Illinois residents.

This is not the first class action to be lodged over Selsun Blue. In December, a consumer filed a complaint in New York federal court claiming the manufacturer made false claims about the product being “natural.”

I started using selsun blue about 2 months ago. Used it 2-3 times a week. Not every single day. After a week or so of using it, I started noticing my hair was falling out more than normal when I would brush my hair. My hair used to be thick but now it’s not as thick. I would like to be added to this!!

I started using selsun blue after what I think was an allergic reaction on my scalp to another shampoo with essential oils in Aug 2021 and I thought it was helping with the burning/itching, so I continued use for maybe 3-4 weeks and like 2 times a week washing. Then, I stopped using it and switched to another shampoo. Well I don’t think my scalp liked that and now I’m losing hair on the crown of my head! Plus so much dandruff/Thinning and damaged! Which doesn’t make sense because I had just got it cut. I used to have beautiful long thick hair and now my hair is thin and brittle and my scalp will burn with any shampoo I use now… I’m going to the dermatologist soon, but I think selsun blue is the culprit for my issue. If they recommend it. I will have to decline! Please add me!

I had dandruff and my doctor recommended Selsun Blue. After using it, my dandruff went away but my hair started to thin heavily in a local area at the top of my head. I also have irritation on my scalp since I’ve stopped using Selsun Blue because of the hair loss.

  3. Laura Bales says:

Omg this explains why I kept losing so much hair. for over a year.My dr ran a panel of blood test a couple of times and everything. Because we couldn’t figure out what was happening. And he came to conclusion that it was soap or the environment. But not my health. Causing it. So I eliminated selsun blue, also a few other shampoos I’ve seen recently posted. And once in awhile I still lose hair. But not in huge clumps any more.feel free to add me.

Started using Selson Blue about a month ago, I’ve struggled with dandruff for years, just recently I noticed lots of hair coming out when brushing, very unusal for me. I realized days later it had to have been this shampoo, it was the only thing different I was doing in my life as of recent. I’m so stressed out about how much more thin my hair has gotten, it doesn’t seem like it’s stopping either.

I purchased del Sun blue because I had dandruff and a it by scalp. I was not aware that I would loss my hair . This is something that should be advertised boldly on the front of the bottle . Ive had a full head of hair all my life and now I’m hair is falling out fast . 1 week after using it it is brittle . I run my finger through my hair snd tons of my hair falls out . I’m so emotionally upset . I could live with dandruff , I don’t want to be bald !

  9. Jerry Winter says:

Help! I run my fingers through my hair and it just falls out. I had thick hair and now I can see my scalp from every angle. My dermatologist recommend Selsun Blue Medicated a little over a month ago. Why is this happening to me? I see nothing on the label that warns against excessive hair loss like I’ve experienced in the last several weeks.

  10. Z. Muhamed says:

I have had extreme dandruff for a while. Started using Selsun Blue Medicated twice a week in 2020. Dandruff decreased a bit. Hair loss started a few months after use. I thought it was normal, but as the months passed more hair loss. Last week was the last time. I lost several clumps of hair during my shower. They were falling down my back and shoulders and I started to panic. My friends advised me to change my shampoo. Which I did immediately. Losing hair is very stressful. It takes months to years to grow back.
